Lock-Step! I lived in Colorado at the time and can vividly recall the conversation with my family after we signed him - telling them you might as well fit us with the ring right now!

He is the true shut down Corner and I believe he scored six touchdowns that year (three on defense and three on kicks?) When I saw that the Giants signed him to play baseball I thought for sure he'd come back to play for the Niners. My understanding is that Rice hated him though and was a big reason Sanders left.

Yeah, I was a huge fan of Sanders (in 1994). Today, I can't stand the guy - but there is no question he was perhaps the greatest corner to ever play. As for Rice, it makes sense that they would not get along; I think Jerry got the better of Deion over the years though.

Couldn't have two more disparate personalities. But possibly the best offensive and defensive players who ever played.

Seems like a real jerk. My friend did some video wall installations at a chain of pizza stores that Sanders owns in the Dallas area. Sanders tried to stiff him once the work was done saying something to the effect that just the fact that he did the work for Sanders should be worth more in publicity to his business than the 50 Gs that Sanders owed him. The judge disagreed.

Back to Justin Smith. It's so sad that it feels like just now or just recently, maybe last year when the team finally got into the national spotlight again, is when many people really started to take notice of the kind of player he is. At least that's how I see it.

I have friends/contacts who are very involved in football and friends/contacts who are what I call "common fans" who like football and watch it but aren't diehards, who don't follow day-to-day news and don't know alot of detailed information and it seems like alot of those "common fans" who are just mildly into the game have just started to realize in the last year the type of player Justin Smith has been for the 49ers.

What's even crazier for me is I HATED the signing with a passion when it happened. I didn't understand it, and it didn't make a ton of sense to me because the 49ers had him doing different things right when he first started to play compared to what he's doing now. Ever since the scheme began to change a little bit and he finally settled in to the defense, it's been smooth sailing.

I was always a big fan of the signing. He quickly became one of my fav 9ers on the roster even when our community (folks that posted on the old espn board) weren't talking much about him. I liked him a lot because I use to watch him play in Cinci and always liked his motor and intensity. However, he was still making progress and getting better as a player. I agree with you also on that most people didn't know who he was until the Saints game last year. After the Giants game everyone in America started putting a face to the name.

There was another Smith back then that I always used to get him mixed up with who I thought was better than Justin Smith. Can't remember him now though.

Yeah, I hated the signing because they were talking about playing him at OLB, and even attempted some of that. I thought he would be a good DE, but thought we were paying him too much for that. That was a clear mistake on my part. He's been my favorite Niner for three or four years now.

Smith will have had 4 weeks to heal since the injury; maybe he'll be able to go.

That's the biggest reason I was thrilled about the bye. We'll probably need Smith. Really don't want him to do serious additional damage, though.

Without him they'll most likely lose. If he re-injures it, he's got all off-season to heal.

I have to believe there is some kind of brace, wrap or other contraption he can wear to ease some of the strain.....
