Some former player was on the radio this morning saying he played with a partial tear in his triceps......said he could feel it tearing more and more as he played the game. Effin gross, it was tough to even listen to.

Every situation is different, leave this one to Smith and the doctors....but you hope he's not SO tough that he'll demand to play and really screw himself up for the long run.

I respect Justin Smith's game maybe as much as anybody this team has had in two decades, but even if he were to play, I wonder what it would look like?

If you remove the risk of long-term damage by playing from the conversation, I wonder how much better it will be having him in his current state than not having him? Consider my excitement very guarded.

Same here. I would still like to see justin for possibly the next 2 years or however long his contract is left. I would hope his pride isnt too big to overlook a serious injury and risk long term play.

maybe Justin is also thinking how close he is to the Super Bowl and we all saw how unbelievable and devastating he was last yr in the playoffs....

with his age and nfl position, maybe he's willing to go all out for that ring????

From Sando:

With Smith hurt, a look at 49ers' DL drafting - NFC West Blog - ESPN

I've been pretty happy with Baalke's drafting, but I really wanted to look at DL in this past draft in particular. It was a deep draft at the position, and we were needy.

Having said that, I don't think it's entirely fair to criticize the Niners too much in this area. The team really likes Dobbs, and he went down two weeks before Smith. Any team that loses its starter and primary backup at a position will suffer, especially when the starter is an all-pro. Not to mention that Tukuafu also went down early in the Hawks game. So suddenly we've arguably lost our three top RDEs, and certainly three of four. If anything, I think it's a testament to our depth that we could still plug in RJF effectively.

Smith is probably the best free agent the 49ers have ever signed.

We've signed some pretty darn good FA's in our time and if he is not the best he is certainly in a very small and elite group of those whom are.

I was trying to think of some but couldn't come up with very many. Garrison Hearst? Jack Reynolds? I think Smith is better than both.

Norton Jr.; Sanders; Haley; Dean; Young - Those are just a few I can add to your list off the top.

young was traded to us, so was Dean. haley was originally drafted by us unless you mean the second time we signed him, which wasn't all that great. Sanders only had one season. Norton was good, but i think Justin takes it.

Sanders and Norton definitely. Dean was a trade though as was Young and I believe Haley was a draft choice.

Sanders was the difference in making the Super Bowl team in 94. never knew he was that good until I saw it first hand.

Whoops, I did include trades. My bad - good catch.

I think I would still place Sanders near the top simply due to his impact and the results his impact helped to provide.

As for Haley, he is admittedly a sentimental pick and yes I am referring to his 1998 playoffs. The guy could barely walk but he agreed to play for Walsh for nearly nothing and was present during the playoffs. So, yeah probably not the best but I love the guy!

Ooh. Then I have to discount that selection. He had nowhere near the impact Smith has had, nor was he close to the player at that point..

Lock-Step! I lived in Colorado at the time and can vividly recall the conversation with my family after we signed him - telling them you might as well fit us with the ring right now!

Very fair my friend - very fair! I just fucking love me some Charles Haley. I will never forget his performance vs. the Packers - he could barely walk but accepted (I think) the league minimum to help Walsh and us to finally overcome the Packers and he was present and accounted for in that victory. So, a great signing - eh, but a great & gutsy moment? - Oh yeah, forever!
