Yeah, the SB ... that has only happened 3 times in history.
Once in the World Series.

Old time Yankee fans will say it only happened twice, as they think Yogi tagged Jackie out.

Casey is playing the game under protest.
A ruling should be forthcoming.

Ok... gotta get trickier.

Has any player ever legally attempted to steal 1b ? If so how ?

On a forceout, the bag is tagged and the runner is partway to second, realizes it and beats the throw back to the bag. That's hardly a steal but I recall somebody doing something like that earlier this year. Can't recall the details.

Going to 1B on a 3-ball count and hope the ump isn't paying attention.

Here you go : (Would have been called out had the Cubs had the sense to tag him at first, though).

He got away with it because the ump wasn't paying attention. Segura was tagged after he got up.
I remember seeing this earlier but had forgotten the details.

Close, but not what I was looking for. The instance I'm referring to was a Ty Cobb Tigers ploy with runners at 2nd and 3rd, and the runner at 2nd took off for 1b, intent on drawing a throw while the lead runner scored. It resulted in a rule change prohibiting such activity-you now aren't allowed to reverse steal or retreat to previous base unless you advanced or attempted to on the same play-a rundown before reaching the next base safely, or on a non- tagged flyball retreat, a pickoff attempt, etc. Also specifies in that case, you gotta take the base paths back and touch all previous bases.

Figures, Cobb would screw it up somehow and take all the fun out of it.

Say, I did see this happen once -- my favorite minor league team scored a run on a triple play.
How could they do this?

It would have to involve a rundown with the run scoring before the last out in the rundown is made.

Agree. The run only doesn't count if the 3rd out was a force out. 2 of 3 baserunners and the hitter were the outs. The other guy scored.

It wasn't unassisted, but I was involved in all 3 outs of a triple play as a catcher once-pretty rare, usually 3Ps are by middle infielders. Runners at 1st & 3rd. Hitter popped up behind the plate out 1. I picked off the runner at 1b for out 2, and the idiot at 3b tried to score - I tagged him at the plate on the return throw by the 1b.

This particular triple play wasn't a freak event. It was a relatively normal fielding play though it did include some peculiar baserunning decisions.

3Ps have to involve some degree if suicide by stupidity to be accomplished. Baserunners are always told to make sure the line drive gets through, and they never do in the triple killing. Many were set up by Dusty-esc managers running a hit & run with bases juiced and no outs, or running double steals with 2 strikes on the hitter- I also coached on the D side if one of those- a K-out/ throw out (at 2b) and a rundown between 3rd & home on the lead runner going wide of the bag. It wasn't a texbook play, because the C should have thrown on the lead runner first, but mistakenly went for the ttemoted steal if 2b because the righty hitter wasn't blocking his view there. I never double steal with no outs, I tried to bunt them over usually, or sometimes if it was a gimme, we'd steal 3b, split the runners, then safety squeeze or straight bunt the runner to 2b. Make them do things they didn't want to do, you know ?

Now, more than I ever remember, managers seem to try to avoid the DP by unintentionally striking out, or intentionally starting runners with a minority chance of stealing, they could have bunted over with much higher success rate. A 12 year old can be tought to get a bunt down 75% of the time...pro staffs just don't practice it other than pitchers and a couple of times in ST. Between apathy and ignorance, the vast majority of baserunners are forced to wait on the HR or back to back hits to score.

Bases loaded, fly ball to center field. Runner tags and scores. Runner on second tries to move up but is thrown out at third. As the play unfolds, runner on first tries to take second. He's gunned down. Three outs, one run.
