Kevin Mitchell wasted little time making an impact for the Giants. In his first game with San Francisco after a Fourth of July weekend trade from the Padres, he hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat and hit another two-run shot in the sixth inning as the Giants knocked off the Cubs 7-5 at Wrigley Field on July 5, 1987.
General manager Al Rosen made what turned out to be one of the best deals in S.F. history when he got Mitchell and left-handed pitchers Dave Dravecky and Craig Lefferts from San Diego for third baseman Chris Brown and three pitchers, Keith Comstock, Mark Davis and Mark Grant.
Mitchell, playing third base and batting sixth, took Les Lancaster deep to left-center in the second inning to give the Giants a 2-1 lead. With the Cubs up 5-2 in the sixth, Mitchell again tagged Lancaster for a two-run homer to left, cutting the Giants’ deficit to one. They scored three in the eighth to account for the final margin.

The victory evened the Giants’ record at 40-40. The addition of Mitchell helped them finish 90-72 and in possession of their first NL West title since 1971. In 69 games, he hit .306 with 15 homers and 44 RBIs.
Two years later, Mitchell hit 47 homers, drove in 125 runs and earned the National League MVP award as the Giants won the NL pennant.
