Please list the number of contending teams that have a backup good enough to lead their team to the playoffs...

If Manning goes down, Denver is screwed.

If Flacco goes down, Baltimore is screwed

If Wilson goes down, Seattle is screwed

If Brady goes down, N.E. is screwed

If Big Ben goes down...oh wait, forgot...it really wouldn't be much of a drop off in this case....

But, the point being...not many teams have a backup that is readily capable to carry a team into the playoffs if the starter is hurt.

Sorry but this is silly. Who would have named Kurt Warner years ago?

No one. But you do not find gems like that very often.

Besides, Freeman is already a proven commodity, and his stock has plummeted.

He had one really good year, and then part of another good year, and then has sucked badly.

Not sure which one he really is, but part of me thinks that he lacks motivation when you can even get up for your own teams' picture day.

Of course, Tampa isn't exactly being run in the best of manners right now, either.

I could see him landing in Minn, Jax, or even Cleveland.

A nominal pick is almost irrelevant. No-one is going to want a back-up QB with a $8M+ price tag. Sure, the Buccaneers could swallow most of that...but why would they? If they're going to shell out $6M for him to go they might as well keep him.

Is Palmer in the last year of his contract? I can't see AZ bringing in Freeman as an upgrade. Palmer has played fairly well so far this year.

Freeman is young. You bring him in for essentially nothing, let him sit this whole year and then you let him and Palmer battle it out in camp. Lets be honest for a second, Arizona is 1-2, has a 57.9% completion %, 3 TD's, 4 TD's and a 72 rating. Is Palmer really very good? He was supposed to light things up with Fitz, Floyd and that offense. He is averaging 254 yards a game. Over an entire season that is about these stats: 57.9% 16 TDs, 21 INTs and 4,000 yards. Not exactly what you want from your quarterback. Freeman fits that offense very well.

By 'essentially nothing' you mean whatever pick the Cardinals would have to give up in addition to Freeman's $8M+ salary. How is that better than the Cardinals waiting until next year for a battle in camp? Palmer hasn't been the problem for the Cardinals. They still have protection issues with no decent LT and their top pick at G being injured.

Because this way you get him in there this year and give him almost an entire year with the playbook. Then you tell him that he is going into camp with the chance to be a starter and there is a good chance he stays. If you wait until the offseason he has to learn the playbook, you may not get him. Get him now, let him learn the book and give him the best chance to excel next season.

It's silly to extrapolate based off 3 games (PFF ranks him 13th in the league as of now). Arizona is not looking to trade for another QB. They're in semi-rebuild mode. After Carson is gone (he will probably last 3-4 years there), they'll replace him with one they draft in the next year or 2.

Freeman is on the last year of his contract. Why would a team trade for him right now? By the time he knows 1/4 of the playbook the season's over and he's a FA.

And for the Bucs, they could get value for him after the season in the form of a compensatory pick when he signs elsewhere. Besides getting rid of a potential lockerroom issue they gain nothing by shipping him for a 6th or 7th rd pick. He might net them a 3rd as a compensatory draft pick if he gets a starting job in FA

The whole situation is a shame for TB, because they're a solid QB away from being a playoff caliber team

Teams don't choose to pay QBs $8M to sit on the bench even if they're ready to play, (Alex Smith/49ers; Matt Flynn/Seahawks). No-one is going to pay a QB $8M now so he'll have 'the chance' to compete next year. Very few teams will have an interest in Freeman at $3.5M next year. He's a veteran QB. If he can't go into another team's camp in July and win a job he won't deserve it. Anyone trading for Freeman now would have to need him now.

I actually think the Bucs are sneakily dangerous right now. They have a top 5 RB, top 5 WRs, and an excellent defense. I watched their game against NO and they were fooling Brees most of the 2nd half. If Glennon can give them even servicable QB play I think they can win most of their games

I like their talent. I think their coach is a goon and I think his locker is about to implode. The successful college coaches in the NFL have modified their approach to better deal with vets. Schiano hasn't.... He also wasn't all that successful as a college coach.

Belichick was a flop in Cleveland. Coughlin had 4 straight losing seasons in the early 2000s. I'm not saying Schiano will ever prove to be in class with those guys, but they were also both perceived to be A-holes who players hated playing for when they were losing. Winning cures that perception. I think he's a solid QB a way from winning in the NFL. He's a good QB a way from possibly winning big

I can see that.... And there might be time. With Coughlin it seems like when he is winning his guys will play for him. However, he's also had some teams that have flat out quit on him - Like last year.

One thing about Belicheck is that he was a proven DC.... Players had to respect that. I just don't know how much players have respect for a .500 coach from Rutgers.

He definitely lacked an NFL head coaching pedigree when he was hired. I was surprised at the time. But overall I think that franchise has been doing a solid job of putting together a quality team. The QB issue was one he inherited. I think he deserves a season with his own QB, but even if he doesn't get it, I think he's leaving the team in much better shape than it was when he got there

Gotta admit, when I saw this thread I thought Kramer would be advocating to get Freeman to replace Dalton. Given Kramer's affinity for black QB's and hatred of Andy Dalton Josh Freeman must really, really suck.
