One major difference between America and Japan in baseball is that we have a minor league system. In Japan there is no minor league that i am aware of.

The KHL in Russia can often outbid NHL teams for hockey talent, since they have a very different cap structure than the NHL and no (or at least much lower) taxes on their salaries. Hockey players tend to choose the NHL, though, because it's better competition, in general.

I guess it just comes down to the mentality of these young baseball players and what they want out of their careers. I do, however, think incorporating them into the draft could make the MLB more competitive in their monetary offers than the system they'll be using later this summer.

Thanks for sharing your insight on Russian hockey. I know I'd prefer to play in the US rather than Russia for reasons other than the competition. On the other hand, if a Russian team offered significantly more money than the NHL, I'd have to think about it.

In baseball, just about everything I've read indicates that the baseball establishment in Latin America is VERY unhappy with how the new CBA rules are expected to reduce bonus offers from MLB teams significantly across the board.

At any rate, unintended consequences from the new rules won't surprise me at all. On the other hand, MLB seems to have put a lot of thought into not only reducing cost, but also on "fixing" both the draft and the international free agent market. I'm looking forward to better understanding the new systems from experiencing how the changes play out through at least one cycle.

A major difference between hockey and baseball might be that:

- In hockey, we have prominent leagues in both North America and Europe (Russia) vying for players from both North American and Europe.

- In baseball, we have prominent leagues in both North America and Japan potentially vying for players not only from their "home" regions, but also from a third region, i.e., Latin America. I'm guessing that the Major Leagues have an inherent advantage starting off, since there are so many Latin American players already in the Major Leagues. On the other hand, better money from Japan (along with the influence of the buscones) could shift the balance toward Japan.

Some might call it entering the united states illegally coming here on a rubber tire raft..but the fact of the matter is that once any cuban sets foot on land inthe USA they get status.. and with status a work visa is just paperwork.

So any cuban baseball player could come here by whatever means and play MLB baseball.... The reason they go to the Dominican Republic is not for a work visa and residency status there...So much as it is to avoid the draft in the USA... because if they set foot on US Soil and ask for status they get it... and then they are subject to the draft.

Agents are smart and they advise the players what to do to maximize their options and salaries... There is a reason they avoid coming directly to the USA...
