I’m not quite on this move for the Dodgers. Trading a guy who hit 36 homers last year. Not much in return. Does this have anything with that arbitration stuff?
Pederson's a nice player (one of my favorites, I would love to see him in a Sox uniform), but he can only play corner outfield and is only playable against righties. The only thing he really has over Mookie is home run power (and even that's not that much of an advantage. Betts hits for a better average and thus puts up better on base percentages, is a much better fielder, a much better baserunner and he hits both types of pitchers very well. Mookie has the 2nd most WAR behind only Trout over the last five seasons.
The only thing is this trade might not improve the Dodgers as much as you'd expect. In fact, here's the overall 2019 WAR from all the players both teams have traded:
Maeda - 1.8 WAR
Stripling - 0.9 WAR
Verdugo - 3.1 WAR
Pederson - 3.3 WAR
Total: 9.1 WAR
Betts - 6.8 WAR
Price - 1.9 WAR
Total: 8.7 WAR
However, it also allows the Dodgers to improve their roster in other areas.
