Reports: Hudler to rejoin Red Wings next season
After a year away from the NHL, it appears that forward Jiri Hudler is planning to return to the Detroit Red Wings next season.
Hudler's agent, former NHL defenceman Petr Svoboda, is expected to announce as early as Friday that his client is coming back to North America after one season in the Russian Kontinental Hockey League.
Hudler left Detroit last summer to play with Moscow Dynamo, and scored 19 goals and 35 assists. However, he was released from his contract when the club folded at the end of the season.
Hudler, 26, still has a two-year deal with the Red Wings that will pay him $2.875 million per season. He is not eligible to join Detroit during this spring's playoffs because he was not on the club's roster prior to the March trade deadline.
The Czech Republic-native was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the second round of the 2002 draft. He played in parts of five seasons for Detroit, and totalled 52 goals and 75 assists in 255 games. He won a Stanley Cup with the team in 2008.
I've heard rumblings about this for quite some time now but this is the first time I've seen it from a legitimate source. I for one would welcome Hudler back, especially if it means watching Big Bert and Jason or Justin or John or whoever Williams float down the river.
He was developing a scoring touch, tenacity, scrappyness, and general ability to be in the right place at the right time in the offensive zone that Detroit has been lacking all season. He's young, he can finish, and he seems to exert some energy that certain others seem to lack.
Of course he'll never be a fast skater, but that's fine.
On a side note, check out some of the comments down there at the bottom of the article. I don't know if those are angry Wings fans, angry Leafs fans, angry NHL fans, or just some people suffering from some sort of anger disorder, but boy are they.... angry.
Hudler didn't sign anything, he went through arbitration. He got a nice offer and a chance to get closer to home and make some good money, and possibly gain a bigger team role. He already had a Cup to boot.
I'm more than happy to welcome Happy Hudler back. Oh yeah, and one more thing.
