Jets travel miles really not that bad

15 of the top 17 teams on that list are from the Western Conference. The Atlantic has 3 of the bottom 4 and the entire division is in the bottom 9.

If I was a coveted free agent (especially an older one) I know where I would be headed.

In contrast the Pacific Division has 4 of the top 6 and San Jose is the only team not in the top ten (11th).

Haven't you heard the Isles play in an arena that players in the CHL think is a dump. UFA's probably tell their agents the only team I won't consider is the Islanders.

True that could play into it but if my choices were Phoenix vs NYI, I may lean towards the Islanders. If it were San Jose and NYI then I may take the arena into consideration.

Plus New York really isn't too shabby a place to live. I think if that team gets good again you wouldn't have too much trouble luring in free agents.

They really need a new arena. Another factor is players want stability. Paul Martin got on the phone after he was told what the Islanders offered him. He asked Garth Snow how long are you guys going to be in that arena & when are you getting a new one? All Snow could say is we're here until 2015. Martin signed with the Penguins.

I find the Sharks' location more surprising than Winnipeg's because the Sharks are almost always in the top 4-5 of miles traveled. It wouldn't shock me at all if Winnipeg's mileage actually increases next year. Playing all those East Coast teams really cuts down on the travel with them being so close together.

What I find odd is the difference between the Kings and the Ducks. Both are going to Europe and both play the same teams (almost). Kings asked to play Eastern teams after Europe to reduce the total miles and still ended up on top
Sabers and Rangers also have very low numbers when you subtract the Europe miles it is even lower.

Since travel isn't an issue, I say we put Detroit in the SE to bring more attention there. Whuddayathink?
