That is about what Ortiz is making. If he gets and stays heathly he could be an ok DH... He is really just there to sell tickets.

They're also talking to Stephen Drew about a 4 year contract....

Yep because I'm sure they'd have loads of trouble selling out Yankee Stadium without Derek Jeter...

It's contracts like this which make McCutchen's look so extra good. Last year, he made $500K with a $1.25 million signing bonus. This year, $4.5 million. Next year, while Jeter's making $12 million, Cutch will be paid $7.25 million.

Then 10, 13, and 14, with an option for 14.75.

Well it's shouldn't be a direct comparison given that McCutchen was under his rookie contract when he made $500K last year, and he signed his extension before he ever had a great season (signed it in early 2012)...it was either take a good paying extension now, or hold out until he becomes a free agent in a few years, which may be risky if he gets hurt or doesn't reach his potential.

I mean, we could also point to Jeter's 1998-1999 seasons which were MVP caliber, and he made $750K and $5M in those seasons, not far off from McCutchen's pay the past 2 years when he was MVP caliber.

I believe that MLB merchandise revenue is shared, isn't it? And besides, most of the people that buy Jeter jerseys would just buy a different Yankee jersey anyways.

no, Jeter jersey's will be selling for a long time....

I know that all teams share the Jersey revenue in the NFL, but they also have salary caps..Does MLB share it equally also?

I believe that merchandise revenue is part of the central fund which is shared equally, yes. Let me see if I can find a link.

Jeter is done!!

Doesn't matter if he's completely washed. Yankees need to sell tickets, jerserys, and luxury boxes to pay off the new billion+ palace and the teams salary. To much money to still be made as he's still the golden boy face of the franchise and all the free PR he generates around Manhattan. 12 mil is a drop in the bucket and all the wasted at bats compared to what will pour out of the wallets of the Yankees fans who still want to see Jeter in pinstripes.
