I'm just not sure what most of you are talking about with Welfare. They made reforms to it in the mid-90s that placed limits on how long people can receive it (5 years), limits on how long you can receive it if you are not working (2 years), and added more work training components and programs to help people get off of it. This happened b/c that 1994 Republican class worked WITH the Democratic President Clinton to compromise and make something happen.

Welfare recipients dropped throughout the 00s from 5.8 million to 4.1 million. I'm sure it has come back up somewhat during the last couple years since the economy has been bad and people have lost jobs, but that is the point of the program - help/support when times are rough.

And 95% of the families on Welfare are either 1-parent families or no-parent families (like grandma running the household). So at the root of many of the Welfare families isn't the inability or desire to work as much as the time to carry the duties of working and raising a family at the same time as a single parent. About 3 out of 4 welfare recipients are kids.

So when you say what the problem is with Welfare - stereotype: lazy people who would rather suck up entitlements than work - you should probably have a better idea about what you are talking about. Those who want to end/cut drastically the Welfare state want you only to think of that rare asshole driving around in an Escalade and abusing his Welfare and food stamps. Not all the kids and single parents that really need the program.

Now I'm not saying the program is perfect. But I'm not sure what Welfare program many of you are talking about unless we all warped back to 1994 and nobody told me. And this gets to the crux of why we started talking about this - media and the people are lazy. We don't take the time to educated ourselves and be informed citizens. We allow manipulative party machinery to cast heroes and villians and buy into pathetic rhetoric not in lock step with reality.

Wake the fuck up, America. Educate yourself, question the message, and draw your own conclusions. Stop letting others do it for you.

I have lived in the ghetto for about half my life (the first half), and let me tell you, whether or not there are cut offs on Welfare, there must be some loophole people are getting at. Post-1994, I have seen many Welfare recipients reaping the benefits of Welfare far longer than 5 years w/o a job. That is where my anger resides. I want that shit done away with. Not the actual program, I want reform to close any and all loopholes. There shouldn't be any, and it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out where they lie.

I wasn't talking about you waking up or anyone here in particular with that statement. I'm talking about a problem with our country.

But now that you mention it, Jeff, I think you are part of the problem. Because I've heard you call Obama an idiot about 100 times. He graduated magna cum laude as the Editor of the Law Review from Harvard law. I assure you, he is smart as fucking shit. That doesn't mean you have to agree with him, but he's not an idiot. And everything he does isn't automatically terrible. Just like I thought some of my liberal friends were ridiculous to think everything Bush Jr. did was "evil." You use "lib" likes it a bad word. To me, that's all useless rhetoric, something that "fairly educated" people don't use. And what's really sad to me, is I truly believe you are smarter than that, but you get sucked in to the games.

In any case, I've made my points. I just think it's sad. And I think that the free media, one of the things that made our country so great, will be part of our slow demise into mediocrity. It won't be a miserable mediocrity, but I don't think we're the greatest country anymore. Much of Europe and some of Asia is better than us now.

I tend to only speak out against negative aspects because this world has too few who have the nerve to call it like they see it in hope for a change. Most of these outspoken types are in it for attention. Me? I get attention as soon as I walk out my front door and could give a shit less. Sure I like hopes, dreams, rainbows, and cute widdle puppy dogs. I just think it's easier to enjoy those things after you clean up some of the bullshit that surrounds them.

There's a lake a mile or so from my house that you could shoot geese from the beach all day long. Not sure the parents and small children like it when you do though. Coincidently, I have never been tasered by the DNR before. That was kinda weird.
