Jeff Gordon to retire from full time competition after 2015 season

This was pretty much a given considering every other HMS driver was signed to new deals recently, and the sudden rise of Chase Elliott.

I hated Gordon most of his career but I have recently come to like him and support him. He was great for the sport and hope he stays visible and active in the sport for a long time. I am excited for Chase Elliot to make the move up. I am a fan of his in the Nationwide now.

I got called crazy for suggesting he would be retiring after this year or the next last season.

So, not a surprise to me.

It's a tad surprising seeing that he was back to old form last year (championship contender) after years of just being a Top 10 guy that might when a race or two. He's got 2 young kids though and his daughter has shown an interest in racing so I'm sure he wants to be all in on that. Can't fault him for being a Dad. They're only young once.

But I also won't be surprised if he pulls a Mark Martin; steps away for a year or so, runs a select event or two, and a couple years later he's running a full time schedule because the itch just has to be scratched. In the mean time, I would LOVE to see him go race at Le Mans or try to run the Indy 500 (might be a bit too old to try that now but still)

I got interested in NASCAR as he was entering... so fandom was natural. Been expecting this for the past couple years now. Still doesn't take the shock away.

Good riddance. Jeff Gordon has long been my most hated athlete. The amount of crying in NASCAR will go down considerably when he's gone, and if Fox or NBC has ever loved their viewers they won't hire him as an announcer.

Would've liked to see him win a few more championships if Nascar didn't fuck with the points because of the chase.

Gordon is top 5 all time, but he's not close to the best.

Earnhardt, Petty, Pearson and JJ all rank ahead of Gordon IMO. Yarborough could be argued, but I wouldn't be the one to make the argument.

Doesn't mean I have to like the sumbitch. If anything, he's partially to blame for Darlington only having one race, and that alone should be a hangable offence.
