I read a very good comment on TSN and it is hard to disagree with it:
"Extremely poor management to lose your captain and all-star franchise player for NOTHING to UFA... I don't care who the player is or where my team is in the standings come trade deadline, if I am GM any UFA player unsigned before trade deadline is dealt - period."

I feel this happens more so in Hockey than most sports so there's really nothing to be shocked about...
