I'll post this here, too.

Eric Branch:

On FG attempts of 50-plus yards since 2006, Billy Cundiff is 1 of 10. He's 17 of 21 from 40-49 during that span. #49ers

We're keeping both per Maiocco

@MaioccoCSN: Source: The 49ers are keeping David Akers, too. Billy Cundiff and Akers will compete in practices to determine who kicks in playoffs.

Maybe we keep Akers for 50+ yard field goals and Cundiff for under 50?

I'm totally cool with this move versus inaction. We have two weeks to work them both out......

I thought this, too, but I'm not as familiar on how decisions are made as to the active roster in games. Could we keep two kickers and punter? But I suppose in the playoffs, the risks are so much higher, you need your kickers for each distance - but also depth at other positions would be a concern.

There had to be a kicker out there better than cundiff. His history of missed kicks scares me more than anything this team could possibly face.

my hope with keeping both is This is harbaughs attempt to get akers his confidence back. oh he beat out cundiff yay akers you da man! while knowing cundiff would do horrible all along.

Could be. Akers really has struggled in the 40-49 range. I'm not sure they'll dress 2 kickers, but that is a possibility.

As long as they are keeping Akers as well, I'm OK with this.

I guess, but wouldn't getting a better kicker be better either way? If Akers beat out the better kicker, great. If not, we have the better kicker, right? I mean, this is how I felt about CK and Alex, if CK beat out Alex it'd be because he's better, not because Alex was struggling.

yes of course getting a better kicker would be better, but since we didn't get one this is the only theory I could come up with.

You're talking about rationalization, I thought you were talking about Jim Harbaugh's process for deciding on Cundiff and turning down the better kicker you referred to in the first paragraph. There's no chance the better kicker tried to get too much to come here, play up desperation over Akers' struggles, I don't think. So it would have to be football decision to push or replace Akers, not for money or just for confidence, IMO.

Kasay was the guy I was curious about. Pozz brought his name up. Never mentioned anywhere so I assume he's not viable or interested.

Or possibly healthy. Read that Nedney still wouldn't come to a team 100% healthy either.
