I liked it. While it had it's scary moments it felt more like an adventure movie than a horror movie (although that may be the intent). The original definitely could have used a face lift and I thought this did a great job of that.
My one complaint (and sorry if others have mentioned this) is Pennywise. Liked the actor, he was pretty creepy but I absolutely hate that they made him a scary clown. Feels like it's catering too much to the lowest common denominator type fans. Having a normalish looking clown in these surreal situations to me would be infinitely more unsettling/creepy. I liked that about the original, Tim Curry's Pennywise seemed so out of place and awkward, it added to the whole sinister atmosphere.
Can't wait for the second chapter.
This Pennywise is the adaption from the book. In the book, Pennywise is a creepy looking clown. It wants to be creepy because fear seasons the meat. Pennywise is handing out balloons at a parade and kids were crying at how creepy It was. I'm happy you were disappointed in that aspect.
They also deal with Pennywise's race in one of the DT books, if you want further explanation as to his motivations...Good pickup on that, I haven't read the book in so long I had forgotten.
Think it might be time to read it again.
No he's not. He's described as looking along the lines of a Ronald McDonald/Bozo mix in the book. The miniseries got pennywise right. This Pennywise is the adaption from the book. I never read the novel and only vaguely remember parts of the original movie. I enjoyed this but thought parts of it were a bit lame. I thought it had more of a Goonies or even Stand By Me feel to it at times, than a scary movie. Oddly enough I also thought it was kind of sad. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing but I don't remember ever feeling that way watching a "scary" movie before.
Not being very familiar with the story I was a bit disappointed that none of the main cast died. I didn't mind the main character or the other 3 misfits that later joined the group, but I found the other 3 original group members to be extremely annoying. I don't mind some levity in movies like these but it seemed like just about every other line one of these guys said was a sister/mother joke or some other insult directed towards another. I just found it was a bit over the top and got old really fast. Judging from the laughs it generated in the theater where I watched, I seem to be in the minority on that one.
Other than that I was a bit disappointed we didn't get to learn more about this clown and his backstory. Maybe that will come in the sequel. Overall I was satisfied. It didn't blow me away but I didn't consider it a waste of my time and money either.
