Is there a point at which QB's make too much money?

You have to build your team and pay good players in order to make playoffs and win Super Bowls. At what point is it counterproductive to pay QB's what the market and Tag demands?

Is it a good idea to guarantee QB contracts or major parts of it that also slots his salary at greater than than 16.77 % of any cap? (average of the top 16 paid QB's by %)

Is that average (16.77%) too high or too low?

If your answer is too low, note that RB's have already been devalued, with that in mind, what other position must also be devalued in order to pay your QB?

I've been saying this for years. Brady has made team-friendly contract modifications and the Patriots routinely won titles.

On the other hand, look at Detroit with Stafford and to a lesser extent Megatron. Two league superstars who, in all of Stafford's years in Detroit, managed 3 playoff appearances and lost all 3 wild card games. They never won their division in all those years. The team, as a team, sucked.

A team needs more than a superstar and a bunch of journeymen.

Great detailed questions I have to do homework on to answer, however that's not an issue we have right now and it would be nice if we just surround the starting QB with talent and go from there.
It appears, if QBs are not winning superbowls or making deep playoff runs, they are trying to make all the money they can and not worried about how that affects team building. I'll revisit this in a bit

I would look at the consistently best teams in football.

NE- we can’t use because Brady essentially made nothing. The whole time he was there, they were paying and backloading other players and suffered this season for it.

NO- Brees has counted for about 12% of their cap.

GB- Rodgers has been about 12-15%.

PITT- Roesthlisberger 12-21%.

SEA- Wilson about 16%.

KC- Mahomes was on a rookie contract.

BAL- Jackson is on a rookie contract.

It seems like consistently good teams have a QB that accounts for 12-15% of their cap as a veteran.

15% of 2021 expected cap is 27 million.

Mahomes n the Chiefs slightly altered his rookie contract recently.

Yes they did...but they had been working on his rookie contract, and before that, they had Alex Smith who was not an expensive option.

The Chiefs will also have decisions to make as they are 18 mil over the cap already. Mahomes is currently going to be 13% of the 2021 cap.

This is another demonstration of how far a team can go if they DON'T spend too much of their cap on one player.

It also helps to explain why SB champs seldom repeat.

Brady also is married to a woman worth half a billion . Easier to make team friendly deals when the money means nothing . He could play for nothing and they'd have zero worries. Most of these guys don't have that kind of setup

Most of these guys blow through their money in 5 years or less after retiring.

why would any player making millions of dollars per year need to worry about a particular set up ? they are set for the rest of their lives and most likely their children are too .

The reason quarterback salaries rarely eclipse 15% of the salary cap is that even though quarterback contracts have skyrocketed in the last few years, so has the salary cap. Since 2011, the salary cap has increased by $68.2 million. This sharp increase has led to contracts inflating quickly.

There's a connnection between that 15% threshhold and what's happening in the Dak Prescott negotiations. I'll comment on that in the appropriate thread.

Nope!

You get all you can and more is never enought, this is PRO sports. All these guys only have so many seasons in them. so grab all you can while you can. You will need that $$$$$ the next 40ish years of your life.

If the team can win cool, but you come first.
