I can see his point. Alex Smith isn't a QB that can carry a team ( :peep: ), we still have a problem on the right side of our line, and I don't trust our WRs to consistently get open.

Our offense is good enough to get wins. But it's not a great offense.

just read that if the niners win 12 this year, which seems almost a given at this point, smith will be .500 on the year. is that right? that seems absurd. given the struggles he's had, the different system, the dynamic duo of nolan and singletary, he can be a career .500 QB after one solid season? that, to me, seems outright remarkable.

also, i fully expected the niners to win the division this season under harabaugh, but i did not expect them to compete in the playoffs. the progress of the o-line, outside the cowboys, ravens, and bengals games, make that a realistic possibility this season. most of all, however, i was, and still am, really looking forward to the next few years that this team should have to really compete for a superbowl. a full off season in this complex scheme, one/two more solid draft(s), and this young, hungry squad should be in superbowl contention every year. and yes, alex smith should be right in the middle of it. in fact, i think if we could trade down to grab blackmon, this team becomes elite in a hurry.

Of course Young is right. The offense, as it is playing now, is good enough to win close games, but not nearly good enough to hang in a shoot-out. A lot of this goes to matchup, though. If we can run on a team, and I think we can against GB and NO, hold the ball, and play an aggressive defense, we may be able to avoid a shootout even with the best offenses in football.

I also think this offense still has a great deal of potential. Smith will always limit it somewhat, but Gore should have an opportunity to get healthy before the postseason. Edwards should be getting back to full health. And if we have a bye week to actually put some offense into place, we can be a lot better than we've been. We've also got four remaining games that we should dominate, which should give us a chance to do some experimenting on that side of the ball. I hope we take advantage of that. Should be interesting to watch.

yeah stats should look a little better considering who we finish against. so it'll look a little better on paper, but in reality we all know this offense isn't SB caliber.

this offense does have a little more potential, but wouldn't go near "great deal" of potential. we're all happy with what Alex has done to date, the bar was low and he's exceeded it. but without a better QB and next a little more O-line, don't see 'great deal' at all.

not complaining about the now, but looking past this season we'll need a better QB to attain 'great deal' of potential.

Its always Smith who will limit the offense not the ability of the receivers. They only drop balls because of how bad the pass was. In fact, the QB is the only thing holding the offense back from winning a SB. Last year it was the QB holding the offense back and this year, hey look, its still the QB holding the offense back.

QB is certainly the biggest factor, but we still lack a little bit all around. again, its because we're talking SB caliber offense.

Perfectly stated, Deep! I would add a game-breaker WR to the list of needs for our offense as well.

What is a SB caliber offense? We're averaging 23.8 PPG right now. That's right where GB and Pittsburgh were last year, markedly higher than Pittsburgh in '08, and ahead of the Giants in '07. Obviously the offense won't carry us to the SB, but it may be good enough to get us there with a little help from a very good D and STs.

As for the potential on offense, I think there's still quite a lot of room for growth. I can't say that the unit will actually take the necessary steps during the season, when it needs to prep for a new opponent every week, but there is a lot of talent at the skill positions, especially if Edwards can get right. The OL is a bit bipolar right now, and a lot depends on which unit takes the field for a given game. And Smith playing well can put together some pretty decent long drives.

I think this team can put up 25-odd points against the Saints or Packers. We've done it against the Cowboys, the Eagles, the Lions, and the Giants. It's highly unlikely we can hang with either of those teams if they put up 35+, but right now I'd say only those two teams and MAYBE the Pats could hang in that sort of a game. Our defense is the reason that, hopefully, we won't have to. If our D can't stop them, it's a given we're sunk.

whats SB caliber?

is our offense on the same level as Green Bay, New Orleans, or New England? right here, right now, do you place us on the same level as these top scoring offenses?

if you say no, then our offense ISN'T SB caliber. if you say yes, then i'll be shocked.

forget all the other stuff (fluff?) which doesn't directly address if our offense is SB caliber.

Young also said in week 3 that he expected Rex Grossman to be a top 10 QB this year. He thought Brian Brohm was the next big thing. He's wrong quite often.
