The play clock was down to 1 second and he didn't want to take a 5 yd penalty.

You're probably right. To be honest I was paying more attention to the Red Zone Channel, had the Skins on the secondary TV

I disagree. Doesn't Gruden make 5 mil per season? He was brought here b/c of his playcalling.

How much does Bellicheck make? He doesn't call the plays...he is the coach. Gruden is the coach and gets paid to be the coach.

Gruden was brought here to fix the offense in general. Gruden called the plays last year. I thought he did this year. I wanst a fan of the 3rd and 2 draw call to Jones when he fumbled. KC had a rhythm going and he takes the ball out of his hands on 3rd down.

We were likely in 4 down territory with Jones.

you guys love to hold onto myths all the time

"gruden was brought to fix Rg3 "

"he was brought in to call plays "

he was brought in to be the HC and part of that is delagating duties

Ironically, this goes back to what I was saying the other week about finding a HC. Most of the hot candidates are great coordinators. Doesnt mean theyll be great at the actual Head Coaching.

Good timing I was just thinking the past couple of weeks and how guys get to be known as hot coaching candidates and how many never succeed. Much can be said of NE and their assistants. They were talking up the D coordinator yesterday. How many ex NE coordinators have gone on to get jobs only to show that Belicheck is the man with the plan. Gibbs was like that, he spawned very few assistant to good NFL coaches. Walsh the exact opposite. His coaching tree was extensive.

Anyhow this shouldn't have been a surprise to the thread originator. McVay and Gruden called plays last year. Gruden said in the off season that McVay would be calling plays but he reserved the right to chime in. I don't ever remember Gruden being here because of his excellent play calling. They weren't in the running for any big name coaches after firing Shanahan. Especially the way that went down with Griffin and his Dad having a fit about the Shanahans.

sportster, Gruden called the plays in Cincy. He was the hottest offensive coordinator on the coaching market. That is why Synder hired him. IF he called plays in cincy why wouldn't he call them here?

Because thats not how HCs work. A flaw in the hiring process? Yes but still not how HCs work.

a lot of head coaches call their own plays. Especially offensive ones.

Belichek isn't calling his own plays, is he doing it wrong? He has always had a D coordinator and and O coordinator calling the plays.

Jay explained how the play calling works earlier in the season.

All 3 coaches...Callahan, McVay and Jay have input in play call scenarios PRIOR to the game. My understanding is that during the game, McVay typically chooses the call and sends it into Kirk, with Jay having right of changing it.

Did seem that McVay style plays were being called in the second half of the Bucs game as was noted by a few good eyes (Manny and Bullock)

I didnt know that. thanks cali. So Mcvay should be taking some heat this year not Jay. So its Mcvay keeping this offense ultra conservative.

Hard to assess who bears the most blame in this system. Only conclusion is that it hasn't worked effectively enough of the time. And you have to factor in lack of execution.

True. It was the players fault yesterday. But there has been some very questionable calls in the redzone this season. I didn't know Mcvay had this kind of power.

look at the offensive team you are fielding then answer the question . we have a young o/line and a young qb with a propensity for throwing picks . hence being conservative

The HC is involved and responsible for the overall game plan. He gets his input from his coaching team. Ultimately, it is Gruden that wants it conservative and there is good reason to be conservative. We have a young OL, young QB, and injured players resulting in players less equipped to stretch a defense.

McVay calls the plays in accordance with the game plan and if Gruden wants him to loosen the reigns, he will tell McVay.

One thing I would like to see is KC comfortable enough to say something to the coaches. They hinted at this yesterday in the game. Basically, KC is a yes man for now. It is normal for a young player that wants his spot. At some point, KC as a leader needs to show up, realize this is his team, and demand a freer reign.
