When has a 10 year deal for ANY amount turned out to be a good idea?? And 40 million per? Hit the streets Bryce. If the Nats were smart they'd trade him for a boatload of talent and let him be someone else's problem. They can probably figure out a way to miss the playoffs or lose in the NLDS without him

IMHO...if the Nats don't win a WS title by the time his current contract expires in 2 yrs...I think he'll want outta there anyway. He's gonna get paid wherever he lands.

Maybe in the NBA. In the MLB, winning is less important because it's so damn hard to win a WS. In the MLB, it comes down to dollars in free agency.

Is that why Trout doesn't demand a trade from Anaheim? Or Greinke leaving LA for AZ? There are plenty of examples of players not giving 2 fucks about winning and going with the money. Many more examples than there are of players staying with a team and taking less money in order to win.

No.. lol. He plays OF... RF at that, probably one of the most least important positions and had ONE GREAT season. Before I pay him ANYTHING like that he better be putting up the next TWO seasons at .300+ and 40 homers.

Trout plays CF.
Bryant plays basically everywhere, but 3B mostly.
Seagar plays SS.
Betts plays RF, granted...

All three of those are already INSANELY more valuable position wise and as of now are better batters than Harper.

But someone will overpay of course. It just happens.

Id take Machado ahead of all but Trout.

And it's gonna get worse for the majority of teams...they'll have to start supplementing to get revenue coming in somehow. Basically all the owners have huge portions of their capital tied up in other things/ventures outside of baseball.

What this may end up being, in some sort of annoying way, is that when a guy comes to bat, he will be announced as "the Nationals cleanup hitter, brought to you by Chase Bank, the left fielder who saves big and steals a lot, No. 34 .... BRYCE HARPER!"

They already do this some in the indy leagues where a player earns about $1,400 a month.

Wearing a corporate logo doesn't bother me all that much. What does bother me is that teams will invest this much money in a player, then after the guy declines, the team goes into a 23-year tank because they claim they haven't got the money to cover the payroll. I can cite the Reds as an example. They won't win shit again in my lifetime but we get to watch Joey Votto play 1st base.

Well the original A-Rod deal that ran from 2001-2010 would have been a good deal throughout, but then it got extended.

Also the Jeter contract is another example. His 2 best seasons in that 2001-2010 span came in the back half of that contract (2006 and 2009).

Yeah A-Rod is probably the one real exception imo. Otherwise most of the deals 8+ years have been pretty bad

Oh I agree, definitely have more bad deals than good. For 8-year deals, the Manny deal from 2001-2008 and the Cabrera deal from 2008-2015 both worked out well.
