Is Baker Mayfield a Bust?

Damn really? He's never thrown for 4,000 yard or 30 TD's in a season. What do you think his completion percentage will be?

Maybe but again a new offense system, new coaching staff, new teammates. He had times he's played well, but more often he's played badly. I'm not liking his chances as a legit starter.

you got to remember. He has only had one healthy season with a decent coach in his career. He has won with some pretty shitty coaching.
I think ol' Pete would be a good mix with Baker.
I think he is a midpack starter. Not top 10, but also not bottom 10.

you also got to remember, he played on a team with 2 #1 RBs. You cant hand the ball enough to satisfy both of these guys.
Seattles RBs are a revolving door.
Think his cmp pct would be in the low mid 60's. 63,s to 64,s pct. range.

Possibly. They had the #13 pick this year and they gave up 3 first rounders, a third and a 4th to get Watson. So even if they did no worse than last year they likely could have used a similar haul of picks to trade up to the top of the round and grab a QB the liked. And perhaps more importantly, they would also have $46M more per year (less first round QB salary) in cap space to upgrade the team at other positions.

I mean, wouldn't other teams who likely will lose more AND have extra picks have an easier time getting a top pick next year than the Browns?

Look I'm not a Brownie basher. I give most of you fans big credit for standing behind your team. I actually pull for teams like them, Detroit and Buffalo if my Pats are eliminated or not playing them. Can't root too much for the Bills any longer, they've gotten to good. But would pull for them if they rep the AFC in the SB.

No bs good luck with your season. You're going to need it with all the drama and potential drama.

No doubt it's been rough, especially since the return. Even before the move we had guys here who went on to great things elsewhere who were disasters when in charge here.

I wouldn't take anything seriously either until it actually happens. Not like there is accountability to make up a rumor if it's wrong...especially when attached to unnamed sources.

It doesn't seem like an insurmountable problem. If the front office wanted to make things right with Baker they probably could, but it would be unpleasant.

And they should. Getting rid of a middling QB on a contending team and rolling instead with a guy who should only be a backup is obviously malpractice. If you need to mend a freaking fence, mend it.

I don't think they will. This front office has completely butchered the QB situation for no reason at all so it was foolish to think they'd be sensible now. They could have had the hard conversation with Mayfield up front and he'd have eventually played hard for them in this contract year as he gets ready to move on. Instead they avoided the conversation and bitched about him as if they could afford to burn him.

Mayfield may be whining about his bruised ego, but a lot of guys at this level have tender egos. Front office can't afford to have tender egos, too.

I got sucked into the idea that the Browns will work it out because it's so blindingly obvious that they should. But I have serious doubts.

Somebody's going to get a decent but whiny QB for a pretty good deal, and the Browns will have squandered an asset.

Butchered it by going after a top tier QB many others wanted? I mean, just because we haven't heard it on IG doesn't mean Baker and the FO have not had the conversations you suggest they'd need to have.

What can the Browns do to mend the fences? They can't give him more money and they can't extend him because they already have Watson. The guy is insecure and immature and I don't know what they can do to change that. He also just isn't very good so IMO they should follow through with unloading him even if Watson is out the year. I also disagree there is such of a difference between Baker and Brissett. I think the Browns are better off playing Brissett than Baker this year after everything that has happened and could you imagine him sulking on the sideline on tv every week if he stays? It will be worse than when the lady didn't show up for the book club...

what COULD they do? They could say come in, do your job and ball out like you did with this offense in 2020....and now with some better weapons.

No, I cannot imagine him sulking on the sideline as unless he's the starter it's highly unlikely he'd be around.

It's the FO's job to make it a better situation for Mayfield.

Brissett's career net yards per attempt is 5.39 v. Mayfield's 6.43. Brissett isn't much worse than 2021 Baker, though, so it comes down to whether you think he was really hurt and how much it affected him, or if that was Baker's new baseline.

There's also something to be said for writing the season off, but that seems pretty unfair to the rest of the team, which is otherwise pretty solid.

Last comment is why I doubt they'd let it happen and could do as you suggest. Players are not really as into the drama that fans/media are.

But, sure, IF they just think 2021 is the real Baker then it makes no sense to bring him back.

I actually like Baker. I mean, he's got talent. It's also fair to point out that in his time there, Cleveland has been the poster child for instability and mismanagement from the top on down - and not to mention the amount of staff turnover. He was off to a pretty solid start last year, before the injury (IIRC). He's had the flashes, but I think at least some of his inconsistency mirrors the inconsistency that was heaped around him.

I think landing on a team with some stability around him on offense, and an organization that has some stability, especially in the coaching ranks, could bring out a more consistent product.

No disagreement there, but seems we are on the way to some much needed coaching/FO stability. we'll see.

4 seasons. Better than expected in 2 of them. Bit of an exaggeration to say more often he's played badly (and one of those 2 seasons he was hurt needing surgery).

Most likely Seattle sending a 3rd or 4th for Mayfield and a 6th, maybe a 5th.

The fact is the Browns won't be giving up picks to trade Baker...you are dreaming if you think that happens. They will cover a portion of the salary, that is a given.

Sweating? When the Browns first traded for Watson, Browns fans knew what they were getting themselves into but they also have their franchise QB for the future. I already told you what I think will happen and I don't think anything has changed. If Goodell does not listen to the NFLPA he is going to see a shitstorm after how he dealt with all these owners' situations.

He either gets a year and the NFLPA decides to lower the suspension to 10-12 games, something like that or this is all clickbait to make it look like Goodell did his very best to get the one year for Watson and he gets a lowered suspension-less than one year.
