MIAMI (4/29) -- Although captain David Wright is now eligible to return from the disabled list, the New York Mets may wait until a May 8-10 series in Philadelphia to activate the third baseman.

i
When Wright attempts to accelerate while running full throttle, he still feels the right hamstring strain that originally sent him to the DL. Wright is not experiencing pain, and manager Terry Collins said Wright is continuing uninterrupted with his progression toward returning.

Wright has fielded grounders while moving laterally. He also took live batting practice Wednesday at the Mets' complex in Port St. Lucie.

Wright has yet to do any running beyond in a straight line, though.

With the Mets having days off on Monday and Thursday next week, they may just have Wright remain on the DL for a midweek two-game series against the Baltimore Orioles at Citi Field. That conservative approach would mean Wright's activation could wait until the May 8 opener in Philly.

For the (slightly) older Mets fans out there: Remember the early 80s when the Mets sucktitude couldn't get any worse? Then Cashman took over, Seaver came back in '83 and the more perceptive of us could see a little hope...

Then came Gooden in '84, and Straw, and with Keith at first base and Carter and the rest of the kids to follow...

Boom goes the dynamite! Dunno how long it's gonna take, but I'm starting to get that feeling again.

Javier Baez rumor is heating up...

I don't think I'd give up one of the big guns for him. I'm sorry Cubs but if you want one of the big guns give up one of yours. Baez is more of a Montero/Gee package than a Syndergaard trade in my books.

Agreed, but there's the rub. I wouldn't trade Syndergaard or Matz for him, but I highly doubt Montero/Gee will do it. I wouldn't mind Alcantara for that kind of price range.

Just to add, I wouldn't trade Thor or Matz for Tulo, either.

From Adam Ruben's ESPN-NY column earlier today:

CHICAGO -- The New York Mets have not yet written off range-challengedWilmer Flores as their No. 1 shortstop, although Ruben Tejada recently has started to chip away at least modestly at Flores’ playing time. Flores, in fact, has a team-leading four home runs.

Still, the consensus among in-the-know observers is the Mets at some point will need to pull the trigger and obtain a top-tier shortstop if they truly plan to capitalize on their standout pitching and contend before prospect Amed Rosario, 19, is ready to contribute in a couple of years.

(Four-time All-Star Troy Tulowitzki has been a Rockies mainstay since 2006, playing in 990 games-as of May 12. Would he fit in with the Mets?)

The Amazin's rank 25th in the majors in runs scored, 23rd in batting average (.236), 28th in
slugging percentage (.352) and 26th in homers (23).

So the report that Colorado Rockiesshortstop Troy Tulowitzki may request a trade after meeting with his agent later this week undoubtedly must be intriguing from a Mets perspective.

Tulowitzki, 30, is hitting .298 with two homers and 11 RBIs in 104 at-bats with the Rockies this season. And although injury-prone, he has yet to miss a game for Colorado in 2015.

Still, as they have in the past, Mets insiders portray the Amazin's acquiring the four-time All-Star Tulowitzki as highly unlikely. They cite three factors:

•Injury history. The past three seasons, Tulowitzki has been limited to 47, 126 and 91 games. He did not appear after July 19 last season because of a left-hip injury that required surgery.

•Salary. The Mets have been slightly more liberal with their payroll. It is projected to exceed $100 million this season, up from $83 million a year ago. But the free-spending days have not yet returned. And Tulowitzki's salary, especially considering his injury history, is not something the Mets are eager to absorb. Tulowitzki is owed $20 million annually through 2019, then $14 million the following year. By the time a team option is reached for 2021, Tulowitzki will be 36 years old.

•Trade package. The Mets have shown little inclination to part with a top MLB-ready pitcher, much less the package Colorado would demand.

A team that makes more sense in a potential trade may be the Chicago Cubs, since they are stocked with young cost-controlled middle infielders and can use a starting pitcher.

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer acknowledged that this week, saying, via ESPNChicago.com: "We've had conversations with them. We haven't made a deal yet, but there have been matches that made sense, and I'm sure we'll talk to them in the future."

Still, even a deal with the Cubs faces a potential uphill battle. A Mets official recently was insistent that the organization would be unlikely to deal from their core of young, MLB-ready pitching in order to obtain even a similarly cost-controlled young infielder from the Cubs. If the Mets stick to that insistence, it makes you wonder why Hoyer and boss Theo Epstein would be inclined to deal with the Mets.

So they call up Campbell instead of Reynolds. I don't get it, does he have a Super 2 money thing involved?

That would be my guess. Or they don't want him coming up into a situation where he feels like he needs to carry the load and produce right off the bat? Hopefully the team can rebound and we'll see him in a less pressure filled situation during the summer.

NEW YORK (5/18)-- New York Mets captain David Wright thought he would miss minimal time when he pulled himself from an April 14 game with right hamstring discomfort. More than a month later, Wright remains absent.

Still, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Manager Terry Collins said he spoke with Wright this weekend, and the third baseman indicated he is ready to resume baseball activity at the Mets' complex in Port St. Lucie.

Wright's return from a right hamstring strain stalled because of lower-back pain. The second injury prompted a trip to New York for an MRI on May 7. Team doctors expressed satisfaction that Wright has not suffered a recurrence of the 2011 stress fracture in his lower back that cost him two months that season.

Wright is not imminently returning to the majors. He has not performed any baseball activity for at least 10 days. He will need minor-league rehab games at some point in the near future, too.

NEW YORK(5/18)-- New York Mets officials will not need to make a quick decision about whether Noah Syndergaard remains in the major league rotation.

Dillon Gee is scheduled to make another rehab start in the minors before the club considers activating him from the disabled list, manager Terry Collins said. That assures at least one more start for Syndergaard beyond Sunday's series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Gee landed on the disabled list May 4 with a right groin strain.

Collins said the Mets want to get Gee up to 95 to 100 pitches in his next rehab start.

Gee tossed 54 pitches for Class A St. Lucie on Saturday. He allowed one run on six hits while striking out seven in four innings.

If Syndergaard were to stay up at the major league level without interruption, he would qualify for Super 2 status after the 2017 season -- giving him an extra year of arbitration eligibility.

The Super 2 cutoff for this past year was 2 years, 133 days. It fluctuates year to year because the top 22 percent of players with MLB service between two and three years qualify.

Because Syndergaard was activated May 9 -- three days before his debut -- he would be at 2 years, 149 days after the 2017 season unless he returns to the minors at some point. So it would behoove the Mets from a salary perspective down the road to return Syndergaard to the minors for three more weeks once Gee is activated.

The extra year of arbitration can be pricey. For example, Ike Davis was a Super 2 with the Mets and earned $3.125 million in 2013, rather than a figure just north of $500,000.

Wright finally got back on the field and resumed baseball activity on Monday. Travis d'Arnaud also started swinging a bat on Monday. If all goes well, these guys could return sometime next week. That would give our lineup a much needed boost!

I know where I'll be going for a week after baseball season....

He also had responsibilities on his family's 18,000-acre ranch in Madras, Oregon. Bitter Brush Ranch takes clients on fishing tours for trout, steelhead and salmon and hunting tours for deer, elk, antelope and waterfowl.

*It's owned & operated by Darrell Ceciliani's family.

I've also been up to Tom Seaver's winery in the Napa valley a few yrs ago. Good times.
