Also, through 7 games (still way, way too early), the offense hasn't come close to hitting it's stride. I don't know if it's the order, if guys need to heat up. We can revisit in May but my initial thought is that we still need another bat and somebody needs to step up and become the leadoff hitter or we need to get a real one.

It could be a blessing in disguise. For me, the biggest reason it might be is because it gives Familia the chance to be closer. Familia's stuff is a lot better than Mejia's. Familia has classic, dominant closer stuff. I think he's gonna run with the closer role, and never give it up.

I'm really glad that the Mets didn't trade Colon. After coming up big on opening day, he came up big again today to help the Mets avoid the sweep. Colon really knows how to pitch, and is just a winner. It's a big key having a savvy veteran in the rotation to go along with the younger guys.

I really like Familia. He looked nervous as hell yesterday, but got the job done (with a little help). This should give him a little confidence boost. I agree that it could be a blessing in disguise. Look at deGrom, he might still be in the minors or on another team now. This bullpen could turn out to be a strength for a change.

Lagares hit extremely well as the leadoff hitter all spring. I wish he had been given a chance to continue that at the start of the season. We need to find out if he can become a leadoff hitter.

We really need Murphy to start hitting as well. I think he's uncomfortable in the 5 spot. He's not a power hitter or RBI guy. He belongs in the 2 spot. Murphy is a high average table setter. I don't know what Collins can possibly be thinking in batting him 5th. Put him 2nd, and put Wright in an RBI spot. The lineup configuration is ridiculous.

That's why I think it's more about the batting order than the talent at this point.

TC thinks he's managing the 2009 Detroit version of Grandy. He tried the idiotic leadoff experiment with him last year and I guess Grandy's sparkling .283 OBP has convinced him to do it again.

Why is he still manager? Whatever happened to Backman?

NEW YORK (4/19) -- In the wake of the New York Mets completing a four-game sweep of the Miami Marlins, the Miami Herald reports that the club's manager, Mike Redmond, "may be in jeopardy" of losing his job.

The report goes on to name Triple-A Las Vegas manager Wally Backman as a potential replacement who already has been discussed by Marlins brass.

The Marlins dropped to 3-10 with Sunday's loss at Citi Field.

Backman is in his fourth season as the Mets' Triple-A manager.

Update on d'Arnaud, Blevins.....& Black

NEW YORK (4/20)-- Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud will be in a splint for three weeks and left-handed reliever Jerry Blevins will be in a splint for six weeks as the result of broken bones suffered in Sunday's win against the Miami Marlins.

D'Arnaud fractured a metacarpal of the pinkie finger on his right hand when he was struck by a seventh-inning pitch from Marlins right-hander A.J. Ramos.

A half-inning earlier, Blevins was struck by a line drive off the bat of Dee Gordonand suffered a distal radius fracture in his left forearm.

Both players may resume baseball activity after wearing their splints for the prescribed periods if the injuries have healed.

They were examined by team doctors Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

Meanwhile, reliever Vic Black's rehab assignment has been put on hold for at least a week. Black has a small, right-side disk herniation in his neck that is affecting his arm strength, the team announced. He will be re-evaluated in a week.

Black opened the season on the disabled list with what the team labeled shoulder weakness. His velocity sagged in his last rehab appearance with Double-A Binghamton. He dealt with a herniated disk in his neck last season.

Catching prospect Kevin Plawecki and right-handed reliever Hansel Robles will join the team from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Zack Wheeler has been transferred to the 60-day disabled to clear a 40-man roster spot for Plawecki.

The setback for Black is a bummer. If we can tread water until these guys start getting healthy their additoins could be the equivalent of making a big trade.

Bobby P. not getting it done......yet.

NEW YORK -- Bobby Parnell's road back from Tommy John surgery has included some rough rehab appearances.

The latest came Tuesday afternoon with Class A St. Lucie. Parnell allowed one run on two hits and two walks while recording only two outs against Jupiter. He struck out one batter.

It marked Parnell's third rehab appearance with the Florida State League club. He has a 10.13 ERA with St. Lucie.

Parnell underwent Tommy John surgery on April 8, 2014.

His velocity has not returned to pre-surgery levels -- not yet, anyway. His fastball sat 89-92 mph on Tuesday, and touched 93 mph once.

Manager Terry Collins has said Jeurys Familia will remain the closer, at least initially, once Parnell returns.

I'd really hate to see Wally leave....especially if it's to a division rival.
Sandy and the PTB can't let that happen.

NEW YORK -- Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria "quizzed" people at Citi Field during the weekend about Wally Backman's readiness to be a major league manager, the New York Post reported.

Loria was in attendance in Queens as his Marlins were swept in a four-game series by the New York Mets.

The Miami Herald reported on Sunday that manager Mike Redmond's job is in jeopardy and Backman is a candidate to replace him. Backman manages the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas.

NEW YORK (4/26)-- If all goes well, the New York Mets could have David Wright back in the lineup by the end of this week.

Wright, on the disabled list since April 15 with a mild right hamstring strain, reported to the Mets' Florida spring training complex on Sunday and is expected to resume baseball activity on Monday. Wright is eligible to come off the DL on Thursday, but manager Terry Collins said it's unlikely that he would be ready to play that soon.

"If he's back by Saturday, that would be really good," Collins said, before the Mets played the New York Yankees Sunday night.

The Mets have won nine of the 10 games since Wright was hurt. Eric Campbell, who has played third base in Wright's absence, has reached base safely in all 10 games he has played.

He better be healthy, I don't want this guy having a nagging injury all year and have a repeat of 2014.

MIAMI (4/27)-- Third baseman David Wright reported to the New York Mets' facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida, on Monday and ramped up his baseball activity in preparation for his return from a right hamstring strain.

Wright was not asked to move laterally, but he did field grounders hit at him and worked on turning double plays, assistant general manager John Ricco said. Wright took swings off a tee and hit baseballs soft-tossed to him. He also threw.

Wright is eligible to return from the disabled list on Thursday, but is not expected back before the weekend. And that might be the most optimistic projection.

"He's not that close," manager Terry Collins said. "He won't be back Wednesday or Thursday."

MIAMI (4/27)-- Bobby Parnell joined New York Mets teammates on Monday at Marlins Park, but the former closer has hurdles to clear before being activated from the disabled list.

Monday marks the fourth day of Parnell's shutdown while he deals with what the team has labeled forearm soreness. Parnell plans to resume throwing on Thursday, although initially only on flat ground -- not on a mound.

i
Parnell underwent Tommy John surgery on April 8, 2014.

His exam last week with team doctor David Altchek did not reveal any structural damage, Parnell said. Instead, the reliever suspects, throwing continuously throughout the winter -- except for a one-week break at Christmastime -- led to forearm fatigue.

"Just achiness we couldn't shake," Parnell said. "We never really thought anything was wrong. We just wanted to be sure."

Parnell noted that Jeurys Familia's success as the closer has been great for the team and for Parnell personally. It has allowed Parnell to work back from the elbow surgery without having to rush.

"It really benefits me from a selfish standpoint," Parnell said.

Parnell's fastball velocity registered as low as 89 mph in his last rehab appearance with Class A St. Lucie before getting shut down last week. Still, Parnell expressed confidence he quickly would resume throwing at the mid-90s levels he enjoyed before Tommy John surgery. He noted he was throwing 94-95 mph in a previous rehab appearance.

"I feel like the velocity is there," Parnell said. "... I feel like after these next four days, it's going to show itself."

MIAMI -- Barring something drastic occurring during Dillon Gee's start for theNew York Mets on Monday night against the Miami Marlins, he will not be bounced from the rotation to make room for Rafael Montero, manager Terry Collins said.

Montero is being summoned for a spot start on Tuesday at Marlins Park.

The Mets do not intend to go to a six-man rotation, though, so something has to give.
he strong likelihood is that Montero returns to the minors after the start to continue pitching in Triple-A Las Vegas' rotation.

The date of Tuesday's spot start was first identified by Mets staff during spring training. It is designed to give all of the other starting pitchers an extra day of rest -- and not just Matt Harvey, according to Collins.

Gee, who turns 29 on Tuesday, is coming off a quality start against the Atlanta Braves in which he allowed two runs in seven innings. He nonetheless is 0-1 with a 5.60 ERA through three starts.

Later this season, Montero or one of the other standouts from Las Vegas' rotation -- Steven Matz or Noah Syndergaard -- may very well bump Gee from the rotation. But it's too soon for that to be a consideration.

"Unless something drastically happens, he's going to be fine," Collins said about Gee remaining in the rotation beyond Monday's start. "We're not looking to make any changes."

In order to make room for Montero on the major league roster, the Mets are leaning toward demoting a position player before Tuesday's game, with Danny Muno seemingly the most logical candidate.

Assuming Montero does not have a short outing and tax the bullpen, the Mets then may summon a position player such as Wilfredo Tovar from Las Vegas after Tuesday's game when they demote Montero. Tovar could stay at the major league level until David Wright is ready to return from the disabled list as soon as this weekend. However, if Montero has a short outing and the bullpen gets taxed Tuesday, the Mets may need to summon a reliever to replace Montero until Wright is ready.

Collins insisted Montero's spot start really is not about Gee. The manager noted that Bartolo Colon, Jonathon Niese and Jacob deGrom could use the extra day of rest in addition to Harvey.

"We think the best way to stay away from injury is rest," Collins said.

Collins predicted a spot starter would be utilized later in the season as well to provide extra rest. The manager added that the goal for Harvey is to make 30 starts this season, with a one-week shutdown later in the season possible if the innings totals get too high.
