If it is I will be furious. How long have they been talking about this "troublesome" shoulder? It would be about the 492nd time in the past decade they've let an injury linger and turn into something bigger.

The entire medical/training/conditioning staff needs to undergo a complete overhaul this off season.

Let's hope the no surgery part is accurate and they're not misdiagnosing this. We absolutely need this guy healthy if we want to make a run next year.

The Mets' Jacob deGrom and Cincinnati's Billy Hamilton would appear clear-cut favorites for the NL Rookie of the Year Award.

NEW YORK-- (9/10)-- Jacob deGrom upped his streak without allowing an earned run to 22 innings on Tuesday. He also became only the third pitcher in franchise history to produce a sub-3.00 ERA through 20 starts in his debut season, joining Dwight Gooden and Tom Seaver.

So where does deGrom figure into the NL Rookie of the Year chatter? Here's a look at all the eligible players who have had at least 260 at-bats, 10 starts or 40 appearances:

Position players:

Billy Hamilton, Cincinnati, .260, 6 HR, 46 RBIs, 55 steals, 526 ABs
Yangervis Solarte, San Diego/Yankees, .256, 9 HR, 46 RBIs, 410 ABs
Kolten Wong, St. Louis, .257, 11 HR, 39 RBIs, 20 steals, 366 ABs
Travis d'Arnaud, Mets, .246, 13 HR, 38 RBIs, 349 ABs
Ender Inciarte, Arizona, .263, 4 HR, 22 RBIs, 14 steals, 342 ABs
Tommy La Stella, Atlanta, .257, 1 HR, 31 RBIs, 304 ABs
David Peralta, Arizona, .293, 7 HR, 34 RBIs, 6 steals, 304 ABs
Chris Owings, Arizona, .266, 6 HR, 22 RBIs, 7 steals, 263 ABs

Pitchers:

deGrom, Mets, 8-6, 2.62 ERA, 127.1 IP, 107 H, 39 BB, 121 K, 20 starts

There's a lot of talk about the Mets keeping payroll the same next year which is kind of scary. I guess if that includes Chris Young that's $7 million there, it almost makes it a neccesity to move Bartolo Colon, that's another $11 million.

If the Wilponzi's don't increase the payroll so Alderson can improve the team, I'll be expecting David Wright's trade request sometime during spring training...and he'd be 100% justified in doing so.

Doesn't even have to be some astronomical amount. Bump it to $95 million and I'd be ecstatic. I'm not sure what our payroll is now, let's say $85 million. Knock off about $18 million for Colon and C Young, that'll drop us to about $67 million and let's say we tack on an additional $10 million or so in pay increases for guys already here. That leaves us at $77 million. If we keep payroll the same we cannot add the impact player we need to make a serious run. If things remain status quo they will not be contenders.

• ESPN’s Buster Olney suggests it could be a quiet offseason for the Mets, at least spending-wise. Writes Olney:

The reality appears to be that the Mets' front office will be left with little money to improve the roster, perhaps bypassing pricey veterans who could represent pivotal upgrades, such as shortstop J.J. Hardy. It appears Alderson will instead pick through the bargain bin for short-term gambles, which is how Chris Young came to be a Met last winter; he was a bargain for a reason.

The Mets' ownership could choose to take a different path and look to spend money to make money. But once again, that does not appear to be the route this team will go, and it's bad for the sport when a New York City team pretends it must adhere to its budget the way the Tampa Bay Rays do.

Ugghhhhh.

• Appearing on WFAN on Thursday, Matt Harvey predicted he would pitch on Opening Day 2015 against the Nats and earn the victory. Read more in the Post, Daily News and Newsday.

Wally Backman will join the Mets next Friday.

NEW YORK -- Wally Backman will be a major league coach for the final nine games of the season.

Backman, who guided the Las Vegas 51s to their second straight division title in the Pacific Coast League, is due to join the Mets in Atlanta next Friday and be with the club for the remainder of the season.

Backman has a career .519 winning percentage (798-741) in 13 minor league seasons with the White Sox, Diamondbacks and Mets organizations.
The 51s have posted consecutive 81-63 records under Backman.
The Mets typically add a minor-league manager or coach after rosters expand.

deGrom struck out the first 8 batters he's faced tonight. 8 K's in 3 innings. Only 42 pitches so far.
