Niese and Granderson both cleared waivers so they can be traded if I'm not mistaken. As much as I would hate to lose Niese I think he could get a very good return. Quality middle of the rotation starter, he's a lefty and he's under control at a reasonable price for the next few years.

FIRST PITCH: 8/14 -- The Washington Nationals could make history Thursday at Citi Field.

In the 53-season existence of the New York Mets, no visiting team has ever won 11 straight games.

The 1991-92 Atlanta Braves, who won 10 straight at Shea Stadium, and the 2013-14 Nats currently are tied for the longest road winning streak in Queens.

The Nats have won 24 of their last 28 games at Citi Field.

Dillon Gee (4-4, 3.54 ERA) opposes right-hander Stephen Strasburg (8-10, 3.68) in the 7:10 p.m. series finale.

Gee is coming off a weekend start in Philly in which he allowed a seventh-inning solo homer to Carlos Ruiz and no other damage in what became a 2-1 win in 11 innings.

Strasburg is 1-8 with a 5.25 ERA in 12 road starts this season. His lone start against the Mets this season came on Opening Day, when Andrew Brown produced a three-run homer in the first inning and Strasburg ultimately allowed four runs in six innings.

For those still keeping track, the Mets (57-64) trail the first-place Nats by 9½ games. They are seven games out of the second wild-card position with 41 games remaining.

The Amazin’s will need to go 24-17 the rest of the way to reach .500 and snap a five-season streak of losing seasons, which is tied with the Houston Astros for the longest active streak in the majors. The Mets need to go 33-8 to reach Sandy Alderson’s 90-win goal.

NEW YORK -- 8/14 -- Refuting a published report from Wednesday, Joel Sherman in the Post reports that it's far from certain Terry Collins will return as Mets manager in 2015. Writes Sherman:

Yes, if his 2015 status had to be announced today, then there would be a slight lean -- emphasis on slight -- to bring him back. But the decision is not being made today and the decision-makers and the decision remain in flux. Even Collins says the next 7 weeks will resolve whether he is back in the Mets dugout next year.

Said Collins to Sherman: “If we finish good, I don’t think I have much to worry about. If we don’t, who knows?”
They have to dump this guy once and for all....time for turning the page has been long overdue.

I totally agree. He's become one of my favorites, but he's our best trade chip for a bat. The best thing for Grandy would be to go back to the AL, but no one's gonna touch that contract unless the Wilpons eat some of it. Fat chance of that.

LOS ANGELES -- Bartolo Colon would have been given a pass if he had to miss this entire past week to be in the Dominican Republic after the death of his mother.

His teammates in the New York Mets' clubhouse understood that Colon had to put his family before his team, but Colon made it a point to come back to he United States and make his start Sunday after missing his previous start on Monday.

Colon did not want to talk specifically about his mother after he threw six innings and allowed two runs in an 11-3 Mets win against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he did say he hasn’t gotten much sleep and that he wanted to come back and pitch for his team before heading back to the D.R. for the funeral on Thursday.

Bartolo Colon allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five over six innings in Sunday's win.

Colon is expected back to make his next start Saturday.

“He’s a competitive guy. He knows he has to step up. He’s had a tough week,” manager Terry Collins said. “When he came out in the sixth I think that’s the first time in his career he’s ever said, ‘I’m done.’ He gave us what we had to have.”

Colon’s gesture, whether it was to get his mind off his family for a few hours or other reasons, was not lost on a clubhouse full of sympathetic teammates.

“We all tried to kind of rally around him and give him as much support as we can,” first baseman Lucas Duda said. “He’s an unbelievable person to go out and do that today. Obviously he has other things on his mind.

“I think his No. 1 priority is his family. Showing the kind of heart he has is something guys really respect in the clubhouse.”

Colon may have made his last start for the Mets, who placed the 41-year-old on revocable waivers. If a team claims him, the Mets can use it as a salary dump, work out a trade or pull him back and keep him and his $11 million salary for next season.

Colon did not know he was on waivers until reporters informed him.
