9/23-25....
FIRST PITCH:
The Mets are now tied for second place in the NL East with the freefalling Atlanta Braves at 76-80.

As for another goal: If the Mets want to reach .500, they will need to win at least five of their remaining six games.

And that means taking care of the Washington Nationals, who certainly have dominated the meetings of late. The Nats are 13-3 against the Mets this season as the teams enter a three-game series in D.C.

The most wins by a team against the Mets in a single season is 16. That was accomplished by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers in 1962, then the Dodgers again in ’63.

Bartolo Colon (14-12, 4.02 ERA) -- who will also start the season finale -- opposes right-hander Tanner Roark (14-10, 2.85) at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.

The Mets are expected to declare before the game whether Jacob deGrom will be granted another start or will be shut down for the season with an innings cap. The Houston Astros, who conclude the season at Citi Field, are facing the same decision with ex-Met Collin McHugh.

Wilfredo Tovar is due to join the Mets after Dilson Herrera suffered a strained right quadriceps at Turner Field.

This is also the final series for Kevin Burkhardt as SNY’s field reporter, since he has weekend football duties for Fox.

NEW YORK -- On the day the Atlanta Braves fired general manager Frank Wren, they also suffered a 1-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.

That allowed the Mets to move even with the Braves for second place in the NL East at 76-80. Six games remain.

The Braves have lost four straight and are an MLB-worst 4-15 in September.

The Mets had not been in second place since April 29, when they were 15-11.

New York -- Zack Wheeler finished his season with an 11-11 record and 3.54 ERA. In 32 starts, he allowed 167 hits and 79 walks while striking out 187 in 185 1/3 innings.

His reaction?

"I had a rough first half and I turned it around in the second half," Wheeler said after allowing three runs in five innings Thursday night in a 3-0 loss to the Washington Nationals. "I had my games where I was up and down through the year. It's all a learning process and it will make me that much better next year."

All three runs against Wheeler came in the fourth inning.

"They hit one ball hard the whole night," Wheeler said. "I did walk three guys -- two that inning, I think -- and I did hit a guy. It's just one of those games where everything is getting through the holes or just dropping in. It was not the way I wanted to go out this year, but it happened."

Also...
New York -- Sandy Alderson finally ended the Mets' stealthiness about Travis d'Arnaud's injury.

Alderson said late Thursday that d'Arnaud has an elbow issue. The degree of the severity will not be known until d'Arnaud is examined by Mets doctors on Friday in New York.

While pitchers primarily undergo Tommy John surgery, catchers have undergone the procedure too, including ex-Met Vance Wilson. Still, the Mets offered no indication the damage rises to that level.

New York-- The changes are unlikely to be overly dramatic, but the expectation remains that Citi Field will undergo a modest reconfiguration in right and right-center field this offseason to help the power numbers of Curtis Granderson and David Wright, according to team insiders.

Team officials are still working through the details and are not ready to announce anything firm.

It would mark the second modification to Citi Field's dimensions. Between the 2011 and '12 seasons, the Mets made radical adjustments to the stadium's dimensions -- reducing the "Mo's Zone" nook in right field, creating a "Party City Deck" in left field by building an eight-foot wall in front of the existing "Great Wall of Flushing," and trimming the dimensions in right-center.

NEW YORK -- Jacob deGrom is getting married on Nov. 8. The NL Rookie of the Year Award will be announced the following week.

Let's just say it figures to be a pretty good month for deGrom.

Oddsmaker Bovada has labeled deGrom a 1-to-3 favorite to win the award.

That's not 3-to-1. That's 1-to-3, as in wager three units to win one.

The only other candidate on the board is Cincinnati outfielder Billy Hamilton. He's listed at 2-to-1.

NEW YORK -- 9/29-- The Mets initially indicated Jonathon Niese would see a doctor on Monday for a follow-up after departing Saturday's game with a rapid heartbeat. However, Niese is doing fine and intends to head home to Ohio without the need for an examination.

Niese also had rapid heartbeats on the mound during games in 2011 and '12. In those instances, he was required to wear a Holter monitor to determine if any heart irregularities existed.

Although a surgical procedure known as ablation initially was recommended, Niese ultimately was examined after the second instance at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic. They advised him that no procedure was required.

Niese has said the issue has been limited to the three instances on the mound. He has added that it quickly goes away and is not considered concerning.

NEW YORK -- Fresh off a contract extension through the 2017 season, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson again has quite a bit on his plate during the offseason.

Among his tasks: He must try to upgrade shortstop and left field, while potentially shopping starting pitchers including Bartolo Colon, Jonathon Niese and Dillon Gee.

Breaking Down The 40-Man Additions - BaseballAmerica.com

Noah Syndergaard, RHP: A big, physical righty, Syndergaard easily spins mid-90s heat and controls it as well. He also offers a big curveball that can vary in its shape and size, from a mid-70s slurve to a power offering in the low-80s. He threw his mid-80s change more often this year, and scouts project it to be average in the future. He lacks deception, but has all the makings of a monster.

Cory Mazzoni, RHP: With knee and lat injuries in the past, the Mets this year saw what they saw in 2011 when they made him a second-round pick. His fastball, which he can locate to both sides, sits between 92-95 mph and is complemented by a solid mid-80s slider and an average splitter. If he can repeat, he’ll fulfill his potential as a backend starter.

Gabriel Ynoa, RHP: Binghamton’s Opening Day starter offers impeccable control first and foremost. He uses that to corral an arsenal that includes a 92-94 mph that can touch 96 and features riding life. He maintains his arm speed on a plus changeup and backs it up with a fringy slider.

Akeel Morris, RHP: Morris annihilated the competition in the South Atlantic League this year, holding the opposition to a .103 average and fanning more than 14 hitters per nine innings. So, how’d he do it? A deceptive delivery and a lively 92-94 mph fastball are a good start, but the true weapon in is the low-80s changeup that he uses to get his Ks.

Hansel Robles, RHP: A second-time addition to the 40-man roster, Robles is a reliever now, which allows his sinking fastball to bump to the mid-90s. He backs the pitch with a slider and changeup, both in the mid-80s and both average offerings at best.

Jack Leathersich, LHP: A stocky lefthander, Leathersich brings a max-effort delivery which includes a vault over a stiff front leg and uses it to fire a fastball that sits low-90s and touches the mid-range. He uses a high-70s slider to get his punchouts.
