ESPN Cast Off
Exactly how do you know all of this? Have you been to every practice this preseason? Are you close friends with Gruden or RG3? I seem to recall on a few series RG3 actually using secondary reads so at least to a small degree he does appear to read defenses. Please don't base everything on some preseason games.
Again - RG3 may very well fail, get benched or whatever. However - it is way too early to make conclusions on any of this, and all of us may be surprised by how certain players perform in the months ahead. Nothing like having reactionary fans who want to make a QB switch every time something goes remotely wrong. I can see it now - they bench RG3 - Cousins falls short & some of the same folks calling for RG3's head will want to reinsert him back into the lineup. Pretty amusing. Let's just let this play out a bit before going too crazy.
SoCal, I don't think any credible poster is calling for a switch today. We all know that RG3 is being asked to learn a new skill set and it will take time and there will be mistakes. But is is fairly clear that Cousins is more comfortable and effective running Gruden's offense right now. What I do find troubling are some of the more basic mistakes that Robert is making that has nothing to do with the offensive scheme. Like when to throw the ball away or when and how to protect himself. These are QB 101 errors that every HS QB is taught. I personally believe these type of errors are more indicative of Robert's stubbornness in believing that he can out run or out play anyone else on the field. In short, he needs a bit of an attitude adjustment and maybe some humbling. So any talk of a QB controversy might actually help Robert in both motivation as well as coming to the realization that the NFL is full of uber athletes that are as fast and athletic as he is. He needs to understand and accept that his role in this offense is not to make the big play, but to get the ball into the hands of the vast talent he has around him so they can make the big play.
