If the Niners sign an OL whom should it be?

I'd be tempted to offer Marcus McNeil a 1 year contract. He has neck / back issues, but he'd be an absolute BEAST on the right side if he's healthy. Of course Anthony Davis would have to move to RG. Probably too risky a move, but it's still tempting.

Don't have much interest in Steinbach. Loved him in college though.

I'd only want Hutch' if the Niners signed Manning. If nit I'd go with a younger guy.

Gallery would be a tempting 2 year deal, but the injuries worry me.

Leonard Davis? Ehh... he's 34 years old. It worked out pretty well with former Cowboy Larry Allen, but Davis is no Larry Allen. Probably not a great idea.

I'm not really in love with the prospect of signing any of these guys. Nicks would've been nice great, but he's a Bucc now.

I'd be open to getting Jeff Faine if the Niners cut Goodwin (which I hope they do).

We may be addressing OL via draft?

Didn't Hutch already sign with a team?

I'd sign Gallery or McNeil to a 1-2 year low risk deal. If it doesn't work out then we put Boone or Kilgore in. I'd also address OL in the draft.

I'm liking Geoff Schwartz idea. Was a 16 game starter until a hip injury made him miss last season. He's only 25.

We need a veteran guard to put in at RG.

If we were not so close to a championship, I would like to experiment and put Davis @ RG and Boone at RT and then draft backups, but there's no depth and you're mucking with the starting OL.

Sucked his way into little interest.

I think he was playing RT though. Correct me if I'm wrong.

He has experience at RG too. He could be a great pick up for someone who needs a RG...

I think it was Bemular who said Gallery is probably a 'roid monkey. With the way his play declined when he got to the NFL and some of the injuries he's probably right.

mucking with a bad line is a good thing

...Does anyone know if Vernon Carrey played RT or RG this past season? I could've sworn it was RT.

RG. I can't say for sure without looking further into it if he saw some snaps at RT or not, but he played predominately at RG this year and reportedly struggled quite a bit. Marc Colombo started at RT for them and was reportedly worse than him, though.

Thanks CP. If he struggled at RG then he's probably getting pretty fat and washed up, because he used to be a pretty good RT.

Might be worth a shot for a small 1 year contract though. Those contracts seem to get the most out of players.

Yes. Sorry, I had the wrong thread again. I've done that three times today somehow.

Anyways, here's more on Carey/Colombo (from PFF):

22. Miami Dolphins (8th)

Run Rank 13th, Pass Rank 25th, Penalties Rank 16th

So what happened to Miami this year? Well, primarily, it came from moving Vernon Carey (-4.1) from tackle to guard. That caused issues at two positions and hurt a line that, based on their talent level, is better than this ranking. Getting healthy at left tackle for a full year combined with some improved play from rookie Mike Pouncey (-1.7) could see this unit quite easily jump into the Top 10.

Best Player: Despite not looking healthy at the start of the year, Jake Long (+4.4) got better as the year went on.

Worst Player: There weren’t many right tackles nearly as bad as Marc Colombo (-26.7). He gave up nine sacks, nine hits, and 35 hurries on the year. Ouch.

What about signing Kaereem McKinzie and moving him to RG? He's never played it, which could be a problem, and he's not going to get much money as a RT because his play has really dropped off over there.
