Obviously, if we're going to give Ichiro so much publicity for his 4,000th hit, shouldn't we by that same logic tack a MLB hitter's AAA hits onto his total?

This is getting out of hand. Japan is not MLB-caliber. If it were, more of their players would be coming here and succeeding. Instead, only a choice few have been able to make the jump and become stars.

Ichiro is an all-time great and should make the HOF easily, but let's stop with this 4000 hit nonsense.

I think those who are annoyed by this are those who are overly protective of the mlb records that are dear to their hearts

Stop worrying and fussing...Ichiro isn't dislodging Pete Rose or Ty Cobb in the record books for career hits...but his 4000 hits as a "professional baseball player" should still be celebrated and recognized.

Not sure why that is an issue at all. The record books will still read #1 Pete Rose...and Ichiro will likely finish with less than 3000 career "MLB" hits.

So why is it such a bad thing to celebrate and recognize what Ichiro has achieved in his "professional" career?

I wasn't even aware of Ichiro's 4000 hit. But I am now. Thanks for pointing it out!!! Now I can make sure to give him the credit he deserves for reaching this monumental milestone.

I actually read something just the other day asking if Ichiro's hits should count from Japan. I'm sure he probably read something similar and was like, "you have to be kidding me"

Yeah... That's not it at all. No MLB record is close to my heart, and there is no MLB record at stake here.

Stop worrying and fussing...Ichiro isn't dislodging Pete Rose or Ty Cobb in the record books for career hits...but his 4000 hits as a "professional baseball player" should still be celebrated and recognized.

Minor League players are also "professional baseball players". They're paid to play baseball. We don't tack Pete Rose's 427 hits in the minors onto his total, or his 86 postseason hits? It's a strange double standard.

Not sure why that is an issue at all. The record books will still read #1 Pete Rose...and Ichiro will likely finish with less than 3000 career "MLB" hits.

I agree, it's just an artificial milestone to sell merchandise, I guess.

So why is it such a bad thing to celebrate and recognize what Ichiro has achieved in his "professional" career?

Not a day goes by without someone celebrating his great career. I just think the fervor over this milestone is manufactured and irritating. Just my thoughts.

A HoF player who never bitched and moaned his way to a contending team. Nothing I can think of to criticize the guy about.

He's the 2nd greatest MLB leadoff hitter of all-time, after Ricky Henderson.

Minor league isn't a top level league. What you're saying is that what someone did in the ***** leagues should be viewed in the same way because while "professional", it wasn't MLB. The league he played in was the top level in Japan so it's different than the minors. And everyone knows that it isn't 4,000 hits in MLB. I think the point is that he came over at 27 and didn't miss a beat as far as performance goes. It's pretty safe to say that if he came over earlier he'd be well over 3,000 at this point.

A leadoff hitter's #1 job is to get on base. Ichiro is certainly up there, but there's no way he can be considered a better leadoff man than guys like Raines, Jeter, Rose, Molitor, Biggio, etc. who got on base at a better rate.

He doesn't have 4,000 MLB hits, that's what matters. What he did in Japan is irrelevant. We aren't adding USFL stats to NFL players' resume.

Lets stop being so PC. We can't all get a trophy for participation.

The day you tell me the Hiroshima Pacific Flying Storm Crashers are the same level of talent as the New York Yankees is the day I buy this 4,000 bullshit.

Ichiro has 2,722 career hits. Not 4,000.

And before you anoint him among the greatest of all time (like reactionary ESPN), go check his stats with those of some like, say, Lou Gehrig.

Not even fucking CLOSE.

Because they're equating the Japanese league with MLB.

Exactly.

Warren Moon had 70553 career passing yards as a professional, 49325 in the NFL

ESpin makes me sick. They used to report the news and it was relevant news. Now all they try to accomplish is to be the news. They think their sports casters are the stars and not the athletes they push.

Let me say it once again: FUCK ESPN
