I think the '9ers need a situational pass rusher

So I love the fact that Brooks is sticking around for the long haul. I was probably his biggest fan this offseason; I think he played great last season, and he's good in every aspect of the game IMO. However, he's never been a GREAT pass rusher.

This is why I think the Niners need to looks for an OLB who is great at rushing the passer but can also cover if need be. Are there any NCAA 4-3 OLBs who are great at rushing the passer like Julian Peterson was? maybe some smaller guys?

I think Andre Carter might be a guy the Niners should consider; he only made l like 2.25 Million last year, and he's coming off a season ending injury; so he shouldn't be that expensive. He's terrible in coverage, so he wouldn't be ideal; but at least he can rush the passer extremely well.

Or what about John Abraham for a 1 or 2 year contract? He's probably too expensive, but if he's sign a 1 year contract I'd be fine with giving him some big coin. Don't know that he would, but if he's willing that would give the Niners time to search for and develop another situational pass rusher.

I'd say Mark Anderson, but he got 5 million last year; he's also young. I don't see any reason why he's not worth a long term deal.

Thoughts?

so no more Manny Lawson right? Brooks re-signing is new information, so no problem changing your mind on Lawson, just asking?

Situational guys from the OLB, probably looking at the draft IMO to fill that out.

I do like the Abraham idea, he brings vet experience and will certainly push Parys. Or if Carter wants to come back here, that be great!

But i feel Brooks will remain there with Aldon.

You got it. Don't want Manny any more unless he's sign for like 1 million.

not totally adamant against Lawson, just didn't get how he's a good replacement for Brooks?

who knows, he may still end up coming here?

I'd probably look for an undersized college DE in rounds 4-7. Maybe two (one for the PS) to fill this role.

I would of liked the Manny signing if we lost Brooks. Not as a pass rusher, but for coverage, run support, and depth. I still wouldn't mind adding him for depth at the right price.

does make sense to see what the draft offers? both Brooks and Haralson are clear vets, so develop a young guy if possible?

Juqua Parker for vet minimum. Holler at KGB and see how he's doing. :)

We were very thin at depth at OLB. I'd prefer to have one vet (either Parys or another veteran guy) plus a young developmental project type guy like we had with Brooks. That position is too important to only carry one backup. Probably see a 5th or 6th Rd OLB taken.

believe we had four OLB's last season? if so, then Brooks, Aldon, Haralson, and a pass rush specialist?

prefer a vet pass rusher (granted he won't be a big name), but ok with a draft pick if no vet is worth it.

Think we started with four but one got cut. Think it was that vet from SD. We need to add a fourth body who can actually stick. Late draft pick is best bet.

My thoughts are that they already have Aldon Smith for that.

Yeah but in another year or right now Sickness would advocate trading Aldon, along with Justin Smith and P Willie for a prospect, draft pick or the like.

He wouldn't have been. I wanted him if Brooks walked and if they got a guy like Robert Mathis or Nick Perry to play OLB; a guy whose specialty is rushing the passer.

I guess I fail to understand the need for a situational pass rushing OLB/DE when we just paid a huge contract to Brooks and have Aldon on the other side. Even in the nickel, you still have Ray Ray and JS in at DT and Aldon and Brooks with their respective hands in the ground rushing the passer. Are we talking depth? If so, I don't know about signing a Mark Anderson (didn't he make something like 5 or 6 mil last season?) or John Abraham just to back up our two starters as that would be a VERY expensive backup. Just sayin'.
