I think the '9ers need a situational pass rusher

He wouldn't have been. I wanted him if Brooks walked and if they got a guy like Robert Mathis or Nick Perry to play OLB; a guy whose specialty is rushing the passer.

thats what i preferred too, except i skipped Lawson and went right to the pass rusher. this rusher would come in on passing downs for Haralson, not Lawson.

so the priority is pass rusher and next possibly Lawson........if nothing else out there better.

the 4th OLB could then be a more overall, every down player in development.

While I'm on this rant, we should not be paying big money for a vet FA pass rusher if we know it is in a situational/backup role. What we should be doing is drafting the heir apparent to Justin Smith at DE in the first three rounds (Crick rd 3?) and look to add an undersized high motor pass rushing DE in the mid-late rounds to help backup Aldon and Brooks. I would rather do something like this then spend money we should be saving to re-sign Rogers on a guy that wouldn't theoretically play even 50% of the defensive snaps.

Anyone think John Abraham would sign a 1 or 2 year deal?

And who would he take over for on pass rushing situations? And for how much do you want to sign a guy to be a backup/situational pass rusher where we have starters ahead of him?

Sopoaga. McDonald plays NT, Abraham plays LDE.

He could also spell either DE or either OLB every once in a while in passing situations to keep 'em fresh.

I'd only want to get him if the Niners signed Manning though. Maybe I should've posted this on the hypothetical Manning thread.

it usually takes a year for a 4-3 guy to adjust to the 3-4, so i'm expecting aldon to become more of an everydown player. but we basically play a 4-3 anyways when he's there and that's fine. our linebackers are good enough for either system.

outside of depth our front 7 is versatile and damn good in any situation

All Done actually gets an off-season to learn this time.

Obviously. What rookie doesn't?

correct, so we fans will just have to be reasonable with our expectations. he'll need game experience against the run (standing up), but the good thing is Haralson is there.

another good thing is he isn't a true rookie, he's played in games and won't be in awe.

Goes to the original question of whether he'll be a full time linebacker or a pass rushing specialist again next season. My guess is it will be the latter and I'm fine with that.

Fangio has actually said that Aldon will start at OLB next season.

He's already slated to start this season, so your guess is already wrong.

it's not like he's gonna be in coverage much unless he's really impressive in camp. he's athletic enough to set the edge

He'll need to make some vast improvement then. He's an excellent pass rusher, but that's about it.

I thought he played the run fairly well when he had the opportunity to do so. Coverage will be awhile coming, but we won't ask him to drop much and when we do it'll be into a zone where his size and wingspan will be an asset.

I REALLY don't understand you. Abraham conditional and only if we go and sign Manning? I want a situational pass rushing 4-3 DE only if we sign a 38 yr old QB. I want an apple only if the weather is over 70 degrees.

And he wouldn't be taking Sop's position because Sop never plays on obvious pass rushing downs. Aldon and Brooks have their hands in the ground as DE in the nickel with Smith and Ray Ray in at DT. Which one of these guys is he taking over for? Did we just pay 7 mil per average for a guy that will only play two downs?

It's not that complicated. If the Niners sign Manning they are the favourites to win the SB this season IMO. That means a talented veteran pass rusher like Abraham would be a great fit for 1 or 2 years because those 1 or 2 years could be SB years.

If the Niners don't sign Manning I think they're better off going with younger guys and continuing to build.

That said he might get a longer term offer elsewhere, so it may be a moot point.

Ok, so you are willing to potentially gauge our cap space if we get Manning? Abraham won't come cheap and frankly, I doubt he sees himself as a backup. Second, he doesn't really project as a 3-4 DE or a 3-4 OLB, which to me seems more like fitting a square peg into a round hole. Why can't we sign Manning and STILL continue to build? We were, if you recall, one competent PR away from being in the Super Bowl.
