The hip check is a lost art very few can pull it off. Most of these guys wiff and look stupid after it.

One of the most incredulous moments from last season was when a Canucks defenseman (can't remember if it was Ballard or Hamhuis) pulled off a beauty of a hip check and was penalized for clipping.

I found this on the Internet. Can't vouch for it being accurate, but it was posted earlier this year...

Looks like it does help former players. It's not for poor health per se, but I'd imagine medical bills and health problems would be a reason someone would need financial assistance.

cool.. those all look like pretty good uses for the money.. aside from the mlb who looks like they just redistribute it to the teams.. but they aren't talking about nearly as much money as the other 3 leagues are so that doesn't concern me much

That's the way I look at it too. Pronger's going to continue to be Pronger no matter what, but I do think eliminating the instigator rule would cut down on the crap that we see from guys like Cooke. Especially if they could combine it with a better suspension policy. Make sure they get a beatdown and hit in the wallet.

And that's not to say that there weren't some real assholes back before the instigator days (*cough* Ulf Samuelsson *cough*).

All this does is make the "fighter" a more viable player to employ.

Thanks a lot, Dash. Not often I have to check a dictionary and the NHL rule book to respond to a post! ;)

Ballard couldn't catch a break last year.

Kaparitus was hated for the hip check, people will complain regardless.

Ballard's hip check was a thing of beauty.

As for what will stop Matt Cooke is hit him hard in the wallet. Wonder instead of giving an exacty monitary value make it a percentage of pay. First time 20%, second 30%, third 50% and so on. I know the union wouldn't go for it and will never think from a fan perspective that I would rather watch a Marc Savard play than a Matt Cooke.

BTW....This has been shown many times but the idiots in the game today should take notes on how to give a clean hard hit.

Probably fair to point out though that under the new rules (or those that may be coming for next year), a couple of those hits could be considered illegal.

Edit: I don't have an issue with these hits because they were all legal under the accepted standard at the time.
