im just trying to generate some discussion

some people believe that a lineman should take a holding penalty if it means saving your QB from taking a rough hit.

their reasoning being somewhat along the lines of "penalties kill drives, injured QBs kill seasons"

in a vacuum (meaning don't think of any particular team, or really of any teams at all, just think of the idea) does that sound like a good or reasonable thought?

now, think of Tito, and his mostly untrue notion of being "injury prone", and our line's struggle with penalties under pelini. do you think it would be a good thing for the team to do?

contrast your thoughts between a vacuum, and actually applied to our beloved team.

for me personally

for me, in a vacuum, it sounds like a very reasonable thought even though holding penalties piss me off A LOT. however applied to Nebraska (and even though i think our backup QB situation is shaky at best right now) i think its retarded because of how shitty our team has been with penalties over the last few years

Always take the penalty. Always. Saves you the down and if your QB gets sacked then it doesnt cost you any yards usually.

getting a hold costs you both yards, and a down...so does having your QB sacked...so im not really sure what your answer is???

Holding doesnt cost you the down.... LOL.

If its first and 10 and you get called for holding its 1st and 20 not 2nd and 20. If you get sacked its 2nd and whatever and your QB got hit.

Yeah thats my point, its costs you yards whether you take a penalty or the sack but taking the penalty saves you the down and the potential damage to your QB. ALWAYS take the hold. ( Unless its in the endzone, then just hope for the best)

there are 2 reasons why im less inclined to say take the penalty

1. our penalties the past few years have been WELL beyond frustrating
2. we have a QB that is a capable scrambler, so the chances of him being able to avoid a hit is much higher than if we just had a pocket passer

Take the Holding. If yout QB takes a sack to many bad things can happen
1 Injury.
2 total mind fuck if you are on the road it could take the drive right out of your team.
3. sacks fire up defenses.
