Heading to our camp site up on the Missouri river for a long, 4 day weekend. A new state record blue cat was caught there last week, or the week before. Hoping to find something up there other than these:

that was my first ever northern, I caught it last weekend. I just take a picture and let it go because I knew about the Y bones and I'd never seen one cleaned before. and now, after watching videos on YouTube, I can keep a few.

Surprised you've never caught one through the ice.

I can fillet the Y bones out of a northern in 2 minutes now, but the first couple (when I was learning how) I fucking destroyed.

You'll have 3 fillets when you're done.

Back meat and 2 sides. Trim the belly fat off the bottom of the 2 sides. It's nasty.

Some people keep the cheek meat too, but I don't unless someone requests it.

Worst part about filleting Pike, is they are slimy as all hell. Good meat inside, but their skin is the slimiest shit ever. I skip the Y bone shit all together. Cut the head off, Take you knife from the (topside) neck down till ya hit bone, and then fillet back to the tail top dorsal. There's one fillet. Then locate the ribcage on the sides, now that the top is exposed. Fillet outside the ribcage, down both sides. Two more fillets. Then depending on the size, you can actually get two more small fillets from the sides, behind the top, rear dorsal.

Don't even have to gut the fucker. Inside the ribcage, has too many GD bones in there to even fuck with IMO.

nice fush. What kind of trout is that? I know nothing about trout except our saltwater, speckeled trout.

That sir, is a Westslope Cutthroat Trout, and he was every bit as fun to catch as the chubby pike above it. The cutthroat was on a river on a fly rod, while the pike was on a very calm creek, with a bait rod. Both good times, but I'll take that cutty on a fly in a raging river, every day.
