Fountain City Blues
Love Everybody
Hope for Raider Nation isn't unusual. Glitz and glam is routine, heck, they're moving to Sin City in a couple years. It's been a long time since the old image of the swashbuckling and bad-boy Raider meant anything. Ted Hendricks? A distant memory. Rich Gannon? A memory rapidly approaching voting age. There are two things people remember the Raiders for in memories just down the street, the Tuck Rule, and then former coach, Jon Gruden humiliating the Raiders in a SB at a level that has turned out to be fairly rare in the 21st century. The Raiders didn't even bother to change up their playbook. As the years continue to add up, the past keeps running even farther away from the Raiders. 15 plus years of no division titles. No playoff wins. And only 1 winning season to its name.
Speaking of the past, the stadium is a relic. Older than dirt, the oldest stadium in the AFC and looks its age. Only Lambeau and Soldier Field have been in use longer in the NFL. Much like its legacy- the Raiders will depart from not just Oakland, but California entirely this time. Even Sin City is no longer unique in the world of sports gambling. Sewage leaks, baseball diamonds, and a monstrosity referred to by some locals as Mt. Davis. Marks the site. So where are the Raiders to go after being on the bottom for so long?
Fast forward to 2016, they are 12-4. They have a young QB who is humble like American pie, and has a strong arm. What's not to like? As it turns out, a lot of things. For one, Carr's 6.5 career YPA is flat abysmal. For perspective:
Predictably, the Raiders offense underachieved its advertising last season, regressing from a head in the clouds 2016 for Carr on most all fronts to a mediocre 18th in weighted DVOA. Even more distressing is the defense is well known to be terrible all the same. Bottom third yet again in most categories, with holes at all 3 levels. Khalil Mack can only do so much. With the offense in distress, the Raiders needed a new savior; they picked an old and discarded one: Jon Gruden. Man who humiliated the Raiders in their last SB appearance, is tasked with rebuilding the once promising QB. But, also a coach who has an affinity for the old and not very good. In fact, it looked like the Raiders were confused that day 1 and 2 of the draft was not day 3. Still, the optimism glows. In fact, for an offensive mind, his offenses were consistently shit in Tampa.
But after another offseason of hopes and dreams, led now by the Chucky Doll himself, Gruden, to return to reality. Here's the reality, the defense is still abysmal in every respect at every level. Carr is a well below average Quarterback who is neither accurate, decisive, or handles pressure well. Many predict the Raiders to bounce-back, but instead, they should be thinking 5-11. 100 Million should assuage Gruden's tears however, Raider Nation.
5-11
