I'm sure this has been discussed here in the past but I'm still "New Guy" so bear with me. Lots of locals like me here so the answer there is obvious. But we have a lot of posters all around the country here as well and I'm always interested in how you became a fan.

Born into a family of season ticket holders and grew up about a mile from RFK. So basically.. I was raised right and born lucky. :D

Born in PA to a giants fan father. But my mom's side of the family from VA got me into the skins at a young age and I've been hooked. Still live in PA and only ever been to one skins game ever - in Philly RG3s rookie year.

1987 When Doug Williams won the Super Bowl. That is when I first started to follow Football and I have been a Redskins fan ever since. I am from RI and come from a family of Patriots fans. 28th year of being a Redskins fan and loving every minute of it. Been to RFK twice and Fed Ex three times.

As I read your first post I figured you came around when they were good, made it easy to root for an out of state team. But props to you for hanging with a dog.

I'm an old guy and yes I saw the Super Bowls. As a young kid I was a Colts fan, Redskins sucked and very few of my friends liked them. Same thing was going on with the Senators which is why I'm a lifelong Red Sox fan. But then George Allen came to town when I was 12 and they started out 5-0, the entire town was buzzing, and it didn't take much for me to jump on in.

I've been a fan forever. Moved to the DC area in 1966. My first memories were sonny, Billy, larry brown, Charley Taylor and the over the hill gang. Was around 10 or so. I've seen bad times, good times, and everything in between. Lived near redskins park when it was first built. In high school, I was friends with Allen's daughter and she took a few of us out to redskins park to meet her Dad and a bunch of the players. Biggest guys I had ever seen. Not one of the offensive linemen were bigger than 280 lbs. puny by today's standards. Amazing how the league and the game has changed.

This is actually a question that I get asked all of the time, being that I was born in Atlanta and live in the Atlanta-Metro area. I always tell them that I became a fan because back in 1990, as a kid, the Falcons were always blacked out, locally. Therefore, I was subjected to watch the Skins, 49ers, Cowboys, Giants, Raiders, and Broncos a lot. However, I saw that the Redskins had a WR core of not one, not two, but three good WRs. That was unheard of. Plus, I liked the nickname, "The Posse". Also, I found out they had the fastest man in the NFL, which was Darrell Green. Of course, as a kid, I was intrigued by stuff like that. Also, the Skins defense gave me fits in the game, Tecmo Bowl. Lol

SO I shouldnt mention that I have gone to every Skins SuperBowl in my life save for the last one. And i only missed that one because I couldnt get leave and a flight back from Saudi in time. :mad2:

I was able to boot the Satellite feed and watch though. I saw us win the 91/92 title from a hole in the dessert.

Watched them with my dad as a kid as they were the local team on TV in south central PA. I sure as shit wasn't pulling for Eagles/Steelers and was spoiled as they made 4 SB from when I was 12 to 22. Little did I know I'd have to wait this long to enjoy another ( I hope) HTTR

Was born in Philadelphia, my father took a job with the government in 1963. Sonny followed us a few months later. I changed from an Iggles/Phils fan to a Redskins/Senators fan. I remember Charley Taylor, Bobby Mitchell, Joe Rutgens, Pat Richter, Ricky Harris and the GREAT Paul Kraus. We used to sit in the living room and listen to Steve Gilmartin broadcast home games on the radio because home games were blacked out.

Then we heard Vince Lombardi was coming. Hopes were high and we had a winning season but just as quickly he was gone.

As mentioned earlier two years later the Allen era started and we had winning football. He elevated the Dallas rivalry to almost legendary status.

The Gibbs years <sigh> I thought they would never end. I forgot how lucky we were. 24 years later and now approaching 60 I am hoping ..... maybe one more run.

Granddaddy and Dad were both hardcore Skins fans and I remember watching skins games with them as early as 5 yrs old :) Always loved them and will always be loyal to them.

I honestly think the Skins fan base is one of the best and most loyal out there. Having traveled a great deal I've run into many teams' fans and the NFCE remains the class of the NFL IMO, in terms of knowledgeable and passionate fans.

My story is the usual one of family tradition and having grown up in the Maryland area. I too have seen all the SBs, but not in person. Damn, i envy you @Sharkinva

A large part of my best memories involve conversations I have with my Dad discussing and squabbling about our beloved team.

On an otherwise unremarkable late fall evening, aunt Mary peered longingly across the meadow in admiration of natures work. The grasses were already browned and the few remaining leaves hung precariously from limbs that reminded her that she too had seen more winters than she cared to count............

Ooooop sorry ( see other response)

Actually, I'm of a generation that insisted on raising their children with a certain level of pride, respect for themselves and others with a rigid set of principals to live by. Among them is taking pride in and defending your hometown. Raised my kids in much the same manner.

For those who know me in as much as one can on this site, please don't go there!

Stymie your first post cracked me up. Kevin why were the Redskins the local team on TV in central PA? Didn't they play mostly at the same time as the Eagles? Blackouts in Atlanta, that's funny.

I remember a story my dad told me about the bad Redskins of the 60's. Their punt returner, I think it may have been the previously mentioned Ricky Harris, was averaging less than 1 yard a return. Local writer wrote that if he fielded a punt and immediately fell on his face he would improve his average.

Eagles on the NFC side were TV from philly to harrisburg area. West of that was Washington. PA is a weird state when it comes to NFL....from my house I can drive to philly wash Balt Pitt NY in about 3 hours. It's a melting pot of fans but luckily I picked the good guys

Honestly, growing up... during my youth and teenage years, I was a Cleveland Browns fan. Not sure why.. Because I have no ties to that area or team. I remember watching Bernie, Ozzie, and Byner get heartbroken by Elway year after year. They seemed to play on TV quite often during those times.I also kept up with the Skins during that time because they were on TV nearly every week too. When Modell moved the Browns to Baltimore in '96 I flipped to the Skins. Haven't looked back since. I too have never experienced a Redskins juggernaut, despite being 40 years old. I still have a soft spot for the Browns though.

Wow...the Browns and the Skins. You are just punishing yourself. I don't know how you aren't in therapy. :gaah:
