thletics acquired RHP Homer Bailey from the Royals for INF Kevin Merrell.
Merrell is a 23-year-old sporting a .631 OPS this season at Double-A, so the cost was cheap here for the A's. And they're only on the hook for about $250,000 of Bailey's remaining salary in 2019. The veteran right-hander has posted underwhelming overall numbers this season, but does boast a 2.83 ERA over his last six starts. He'll make his Oakland debut Wednesday afternoon against the Mariners.

Kinda crazy how he went from arguably the worst starting pitcher in the Majors last season in the NL to being replacement level in the AL this season. There's a marine layer and a shit ton of foul ground in Oakland, he'll probably see his numbers improve a bit.

And this dude rode 2 starts into a big payday.

Been mediocre at best his entire career, but had 2 no hitters in fairly close proximity, and then big payday.

Surprisingly was decent this year, he has been better than his ERA, imo.

Probably got back a future UIF type, but getting anything at all is decent for a guy like Bailey.

Royals acquired INF Kevin Merrell from the Athletics for RHP Homer Bailey.

Merrell was selected 33rd overall in the 2017 MLB Draft out of the University of South Florida, but he is already 23 years old and has batted just .246/.292/.339 with two home runs in 318 plate appearances this season at the Double-A level. He plays good defense at shortstop and has some speed, but Merrell isn't much of a prospect.

The Reds were looking for something that wasn't there. Even when they get good starting pitching, it usually doesn't stay good for very long, especially in that ballpark.

Johnny Cueto was pretty good his entire career with the Reds, but he's the only one that comes to mind recently. Arroyo and Harang were decent for a long time, but neither was ever great.

I thought of Cueto, but I will always remember how badly the Pirates fans got into his head with the "CUUUUUEEEEETOOOO! CUUUUUEEEEETOOOO!" chants.

He completely melted down in that game.

He did there. Pitched a 1 run complete game for the Royals in the World Series in 2015 though.

I remember when Cueto was quite the pitcher. Seemed like once he fell off he fell completely off. Shame too as he was quite the talent.

Homer wasn't just the worst pitcher in baseball last year (him and Giolito). He's probably been the worst pitcher in baseball over the previous 5 years up until this season.

Him being serviceable is pretty remarkable. That guy was beyond hopeless in Cincinnati.
