Looking at Hobspin's article you would think he was the second coming of Max Montoya. What I remember is we had the worst starting guard tandem in the league last year and he couldn't beat either of them out. While it's true he was only a rookie and could be much better now, in my opinion if he was they wouldn't have gone out and signed Wharton in the first place. I'm very concerned about the LG position.

the Bengals really value our opinions about the guard position. They would wheel out an old man and talk him up as a "cagey veteran"

On the one hand, if he can play we have a bright future with Boling and Zeitler as possible fixtures for the next 8-10 years. But if he can't play his man is already too close to the quarterback before the ball is snapped. I just can't get by the fact they thought they needed to sign Wharton.

Remember the beginning of last offseaon she Hobspin was on the Otis Hudson bandwagon...... Hudson is terrible and he'll be out of the league in short order.

The depth at the position will need to be addressed. Hopefully some quality OG's become available after the final cuts in September.

I liked Clint Boling (6'5" 311) coming out of Georgia and I still like him now as he reminds a lot of a young Eric Steinbach (6'6" 295). Neither are right-guard type road-graders as both are tall lanky linemen whose strengths are their agility and movement that allows them to get to the 2nd level of a defense on pulling and off-tackle plays. The main problem with Boling last year was that he didn't have the strength to be a starting offensive lineman which was caused in part to the lack of an off-season program caused by the NFL lockout. I especially liked how he knew what he had to work on and took it upon himself to get in touch with his former trainer to build strength and improve his agility. He's a disciplined self-starter who will flourish at LG with an off-season regimen and training camp under his belt. And lets not forget he was once considered an early 2nd round pick.

Jwil, I think you and I were the only ones on the board who were advocating for the Bengals to sign Waters while the others, you know who you are, mocked stating that he was too old and over the hill. And all he did was reward the Patriots with a Pro Bowl season.

This is probably a fair assessment - I heard Gruden allude to Boling's leverage being off as the reason why he was pushed around. I assume his height didn't help him there. Hopefully he figures it out quickly.

I think it will also help, at least a little, that he'll be next to Whit instead of Andre. Andre was trying to hold his own last year, and basically having 2 new guys like that playing next to eachother is bound to hurt some. Being next to Whit will, hopefully, help out.
