the two helpers on the PP hurt him. I didnt even know he went -1. He obviously played better than he did against Philly where I THINK he went even.

SO when Ilya was on the ice, and his team wasn't at an advantage, he helped the devils score one goal, but allowed two. I didn't think that was difficult to understand..

Sure it can be misleading in small sample sizes, but over time it's going to even out. Really it also depends on your opinion of defense. If you think it's about 1 on 1 plays, you'll hate it, if you subscribe to the 5v5 mentality you'll support it. Either way, until about a week ago I could find you 15 statistics that all pointed to how awful Ilya was playing.

However, Lemaire seems to have him really motivated, which looks great for us because he's been night and day, and if he's actually willing to play 3 zones of hockey he's going to dominate while he's on the ice. Teams will be afraid of him, just like Parise.

I cannot believe I'm agreeing with cup but he is correct. +/- is a lousy stat that can be manipulated to make most players great or horrible. In reality, its only useful to use it to judge a team as a whole...

I'd rather just look at the devils -55 goal differential prior to the win streak to come to the conclusion that the team was awful

How about corsi, turnover differential, team scoring relative to other players while on ice, etc. etc.

I would rather just watch the game and figure out who seemed to play well and who did not play well.

I try and keep the convoluted stats out of Hockey. Baseball can keep them all.
