Thanks fellas for all the insight. I am going to weigh my options the pros and cons and for once not make a snap decision. I went to talk to a recruiter here in Lincoln but no one was there today.
Like Driaz I'm ex-Navy, but if you're thinking National Guard, as long as you've weighed your options and talked so someone who has actual experience serving in the guard (don't for a second take the recruiter's word as gospel), then if it looks like a good plan then do it. In general I would recommend every young man serve in one of the branches, but that being said, xorbie has a point too - bad timing of when you join can get you killed.
I didn't know the Saddam would invade Kuwait, then found myself over there for Desert Storm. I didn't see the ground action that the grunts did for sure, but I didn't like being there either. Who knows what you'll run into? I say that as a father of two sons, because I won't lie about that I worry about that fact too.
After all is said and done though, I'm glad I went in, and glad I got out (7 years). Most vets I know feel that way. Very few wish they had never served, and I think you'll get a lot out of it.
Thank you. For your service and advice. I can honestly tell you I could not see any action I believe I would pass out from anxiety or worse. A lot to weigh in on
Lots of good info in this thread. I've been active duty af now for nearly 15 years. I've worked closely with all branches both at regular bases/forts as well as in Iraq. Talk to someone who is currently in the guard to find out what it is "really" like. Definitely take your time to make the decision.
