I'm sorry also. You should retire the number of the QB that led you to your first Rose Bowl win since my grandfather joined the Army.

#1 Darron Thomas?? but that isn't who this thread is about.

Auburn has retired 3 jerseys and honestly I think that is a mistake because there aren't enough numbers to go around as it is. Honor the player but keep the jerseys on the field.

Hell, we wouldn't have any numbers left if we retired jerseys.
We would have to start at 100 and go up.

I remember years back there was a high school running back that was being highly recruited by Auburn, Georgia and FSU but this kid wore number 34 and all 3 schools had retired it. FSU promised to pull it our of retirement if he would sign and Georgia and Auburn followed suit pretty quickly after.

Can't remember where that kid signed or if he amounted to anything but always thought that was pretty funny.

Mariota is the greatest player in Oregon history...played on two seasons where Oregon went to national title game. Won Rose Bowl, won the HEISMaN trophy!!

Well deserved.

While the Heisman is a great individual CFB award it's the kiss of death @ the NFL level. Although alotta schools have retired numbers of former Heisman winners. MM had a great career & his number should be retired by Oregon.

Cam Newton is doing well with the Panthers.

He's 30-31-1 as a starter, not exactly lighting it up. But he's done better so far than most previous winners. Just look up former Heisman winning QB's the last 20/25 years or so & you'll see what I mean.

I don't really like retiring numbers, there are a few exceptions. Why can't you just make a plaque or whatever with his name and number and hang it in the stadium? Like what OSU did with Troy Smith this past season.

The No. 10
The number 10 is currently in use by freshman defensive end Jalyn Holmes, from Norfolk, Va., and he will continue to wear that jersey. Moving forward, the Department of Athletics will continue to honor individuals and enshrine jersey numbers of its outstanding performers across its 36-sport intercollegiate athletics program, but jersey numbers will no longer be taken out of circulation. The school's 18 previously retired jersey numbers will remain retired, though, outside of a decision based upon protocols being developed now.

Panthers had worst record in league when they drafted Newton. Now they are in the playoffs.
