Also, is it just me... I feel like Spoelstra is a average coach that probably wouldn't have made it in the NBA under normal circumstances but was the beneficiary of the dream team which has extended his tenure.

I do miss Riley... for some reason I just can't muster much respect for Spoelstra.

I thought he was horrible at first. Of course he benefitted from this like anyone would. However, he has grown as coach and I now rank him among the best. The Heat still won most of their games with the big 3 not playing together or at all.

Based on what? Spoelstra is as bright as they get.
New, younger, modern day mindset.
I believe he was the first coach to give players a playbook on an i-pad (or similiar).

Yes. He has the players. But he gets the most out of them. He doesn't worry about what others are throwing at him. He makes others worry about what he is throwing at them.

Spoelstra reminds me of a young Pat Riley when he got his first shot!! I'm sure Spoelstra reminds Riley of a young Pat Riley too (which is probably why he hired him).

Yes, Spoelstra was hired into a great situation, just as Riley was when the Lakers made him their head coach.

However, there is a lot more to it than just having great players. Managing the ego's alone, can be a huge deal. Regardless of how well a team seems to get along, the ego's need to be managed. Spoelstra seems to do a good job with this.

He is also turning into a pretty good in game coach as well. He's no Popovich or Phil, but I'd say that he's headed in the right direction.

I will admit I was completely wrong about him. I used to criticize him a lot. Now I'm the big dummy! :L
