HBO Caps-Penguins 24/7 GNT

The Caps are playing tonight, but I'm a little more excited to see HBO's 24/7 series kick off, partly b/c it's my team but as much b/c it's the first time HBO is tackling hockey in an extensive way, and just about everything they touch turns to gold. Not to mention the HD shots look silly good.

This is also very interesting b/c the Caps find themselves on their longest losing streak in years and some in town are questioning whether Boudreau should continue to be the coach. (Extensive and well balanced piece on that here.) It will be interesting to get a deep look at how the coach/team/captain are interacting at a time when questions are surfacing. At the same time, Crosby has been on a point streak and the Pens just capped off a long 12-game win streak.

I'm sure this is all creating some great storylines for HBO - a team being willed along by the great play of Crosby and a team seemingly on the verge of greatness facing adversity both set to clash in the ultimate showdown on New Year's which will likely propel one to great heights and leave the other in the mire...

Well, not exactly. But in TV land, don't think those overtones won't be there.

Should be good stuff either way.

I excited for it. Fire the DVR up right after the game and enjoy. Last time HBO did hockey was the Miracle On Ice documentary. That turned into something I watch literally ever single time it is on.

I walked into a Dick's the other day and all of the Cap's Winter Classic stuff was sitting right by the front door. Really cool to see hockey being such a focal point, even if only for a brief while. Couldn't justify a jersey purchase, but I did pick up a couple of bitchin beanies for the frozen tundra of Heinz field.

For HBO, the ideal situation would have been Pens and Caps fighting for top spot in the conference, and Crosby and Ovechkin battling for 'best player' supremacy. Now, Caps aren't far off, but they are slumping, and while it would be idiotic to think the Crosby / OV debate is settled, there's no question that Crosby is currently having his most dominant season and Ovechkin is having his worst in years. So I'll be very interested in how HBO promotes the rivalry in this opening episode.
