Blackhawks have signed Evan Brophey, Nathan Davis, Hugh Jessiman, Jassen Cullimore, and goaltender Hannu Toivonen to one-year contracts.

The bolded ones intrigue me...Jessiman the only 2003 first round draft pick yet to play a NHL game and Toivonen looks like a Huet replacement to me.

they absolutely have to waive huet to afford a roster (even these scrubs). or trade campbell.
anyways, nice to see the AHL recruits arrive. I hope they get a ton of ice time.

I'm amazed a team with as little money as the Hawks can even go on a "frenzy" at all... scrubs or otherwise.

Well, you are allowed to exceed the salary cap by up to 10% during the off-season. Just have to be under the magic $59.4 million by October.

Just like when putting together a jigsaw puzzle...it's best to lay out all the pieces on the table to see how it's all gonna fit together. :)

Don't forget Russian superfoward Igor Makarov, who managed to score astonishing 9 points in 50+ games last season in KHL.
Which is 9 KHL points more than Gretzky and Lemieux (combined!) ever scored. Chicago was so impressed by this, they signed him to 2-year contract!

I thought they signed him based on his last name alone.

The Chicago homers on that other forums see things very differently. They called me an idiot and a moron because I said it looks like Chicago is going to be struggling to make the playoffs. I mean it just seems like common sense to me that most teams in the west got stronger...except the Hawks.

well, i think they're still good enough to make the playoffs, but certainly more around the middle of the pack and NOT winning the cup. that's just me though...being realistic. they have an awesome core, but it takes more than that. (as a pens fan i know this...the team in 08 was loaded, but that wasn't enough).

if they suffer a few key injuries and Turco does not perform, they very well could be on the outside looking in.
I think they do make the playoffs but it won't be a gimme.

I was going to create a thread saying that the Hawks won't make the PO's next season.

I was going to follow it up with this:

I think they're on the outside looking in as it is. Toews put up 68 points last year, maybe its just me but I dont find that very impressive when your cap hit ended up being around 8mil. I know the "core" is still together but just about every other team in the west also has their core together, and their role players to go along with it.

That would be a swell thread.

I think Toew's cap hit is much closer to 6M, which is still hefty for a sub 70 point guy but he definitely earned his money in the playoffs. I think Seabrook, Kane, Toews, Hjalmarsson, and the other young guys are going to improve enough to keep this team afloat despite it's losses. I don't see them making the WCF next year, but the playoffs aren't out of the question, IMO.
