Parys Haralson - LB - Saints

Saints acquired OLB Parys Haralson from the 49ers in exchange for a 2014 conditional seventh-round pick.

The Saints are the most desperate team in football when it comes to pass rushers, and this move just confirms it. The 49ers were going to cut Haralson. 29 years old, Haralson didn't play a down last season due to a triceps tear, and hasn't registered more than five sacks in any campaign since 2008. He's a long shot to help New Orleans. Meanwhile, the 49ers are loaded with pass rushers. They have Cam Johnson and rookie Corey Lemonier coming off highly impressive preseasons behind Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks.

ok what happens if someone goes down. For 1.5 it was worth keeping for depth. Overall bad move. Its ok some times you win some and some times you lose some.

Then they are still that way because Harralson won't help much.

People are forgetting the cap side of this. Cap rolls over from year to year. This gives us even more money to extend guys like Iupati, Kaep, Aldon, and crabs. Hell extend Iupati now, the others can't because of CBA, and front load that bitch with the 9 million we have to use this year.

The cap issues is the only thing that makes sense.. but why did they trade him now and not at the end of 53 final cuts? To just take the first offer thrown their way from a team in desperate need of an OLB just rubs be wrong.

How do you know they took the first offer thrown their way?

Haralson wasn't a starter, he didn't even figure to be 'the next man up'...

He is an 8 year vet, who was being burried on the depth chart. Even when he was 'starter material' the Niners were searching for an upgrade...

Why is everyone freaking out about this?

we haven't forgotten the cap but we don't quite feel the IMPACT yet. human nature being what it is, the problem is 'next year'. but certainly agree every bit counts when looking at this list, especially Kaep.

granted a FEW things could change after this season, no guarantee all these guys play to their potential?

who's freaking out?

he wasn't a starter because he got hurt, not because of poor play?

next, can you blame him for not starting now when Aldon did ok last season?

Half of the board seems to be pissed that all Baalke got was a conditional 7th rnd pick. He was going to be cut, so any pick is better than nothing...

Again, the Niners had been looking for an upgrade over Haralson (who was solid, but nothing special) for years. Drafting Aldon was the answer...

He wasn't a starter, not because of injury, but because he wasn't what they wanted out of their OLB...

disappointed maybe, but not pissed.

we're always looking for upgrades, every where on the 53.

in 2011 i'm pretty sure Haralson was the starter and Aldon was the 3rd down rusher. granted Aldon did play quite a few plays even though. but still, Haralson started and did the 1st and 2nd downs.

in 2012 he got hurt.

Yes!

And while always searching for upgrades, they found 2 or 3 upgrades over Haralson...

And you are right about Haralson starting, with Aldon coming in to rush in passing situations. But we all know, Aldon was the eventual starter and just needed to come up to speed against the pass, and add a little muscel to play against the run...

Its only 1.5 million. That really doesn't help much. I rather have the Vet and Depth. I don't see how this helps us at all. He was going to be a FA after this year so we would have the money free anyways.

Can't get lower than a 7th rounder so I did a little process of elimination.

this team is in "win now" mode, cause it is very difficult to sustain a solid team. should Aldon get hurt early, and/or Brooks go down, we're all of a sudden in a BAD spot.

yes, Lemonier has flashed his talent and that's great, but he's a rookie and can't be expected to just pick it up. yes he can rush but there is run support and a little coverage. so not denying these are upgrades, but they're not upgrades today. you're jumping ahead of them just like you jumped Aldon ahead.

everyone gets Haralson is no longer a quality starter, but as a back-up he's more valuable than a conditional 7th. don't agree Haralson WAS going to be cut anyway.

But maybe it was their only offer? Remember teams don't like to give up draft picks, specialy when the player they are trading for has a good chance of being cut...

You can play the "what if" game at any position. At some point the team has to make cuts and trim the roster. All things considered, salary, versatility, experience, potential, who would you have released or traded instead of Haralson (at OLB)?

Teams aren't beating down the door for 8 year journeymen coming off injury. Maybe NO was the only team desperate enough to even make an offer?

Only offer in the span of 60 minutes? Who says he wouldn't have made the team there is one more preseason game and people could get hurt or blow during their last chance.
