It has been a long day/night for me.

I will try and relay this as accurately as I can and not leave anything out.

I was heading out to my normal Thursday Pistol shoot which generally involves about 15-25 friends and we compete against each other. I stopped at a local store to grab a big bottle of water and as I exited my vehicle I can hear a women and a man screaming at each other.

I kind of slow down and take a good look at whats going on and it is obvious to me that he is intoxicated and she is pissed. The argument continues and I walked into the store choosing to MMOB.

As I come out he has her against the car with one had to her neck and one on her chest and she cannot possibly escape. Me being me cannot just sit by idle and not try and defuse this situation. So I yell and I paraphrase "Hey man let her go nothing good will come of this" He complies very quickly and now has a new target for his aggression and its me. He advances on me and asks why I think I need to butt into his business and I back away further to not let the distance get to close. He continues to semi berate me and call me names and I just shut my mouth and ask him to calm down...(honestly I figured the cops must be on the way cause someone must have called them already) but he continues to advance. I then stop and tell him not to advance on me anymore or he will be very sorry. He reaches into his front pocket (while looking down) and pulls out a knife of some sort...Well while he was looking down I was drawing my weapon and making sure I was going to not die tonight.

He looks up and starts to say something like how bout this tough guy and then see's that he has brought a knife to a gun fight and will certainly lose. He begins to back off and start yelling at his GF/Wife and calling me names. I state very frankly to get on the ground and shut your fucking piehole which to his credit he agrees..not like he had much of a choice. I dial the local police from my cell and tell them I have a man held at gunpoint.

In about 8 mins it is like WW3 and there is a million cruisers and I am in handcuffs. Once the State Police showed up they questioned me and got a statement from me and ordered my release. I also got my gun back.

Some of the other threads have some banter going back and forth but this shit just happened tonight.

I am not 100% sure if what I did was right or not to be honest. Should I have just ignored it and gone on my way? Should I have just called 911 and waited 8 mins for a LE to show up?

Honestly folks as a card carrying NRA member and a person who carries a weapon most of the time I am a bit setback about it. I keep thinking about if the guy kept advancing on me and I had to drop him what would happen to me and my family. Would I be in jail? Would I have been considered the aggressor ?

In any case I am fairly freaked out. I have the training and used it tonight. Now I am confronted with the after results. the what if's per say.

If your life was truly in danger, blow the fuckers face wide open.

But luckily it didn't come to that. Good job bro.

He pulled a knife on you, you were in the right. And you were standing up for a woman. He should never treat her like that. Ever. A man shouldn't lay hands on a woman in such a way (and frankly, a woman shouldn't either, but there are cases). I think you did the right thing. You handled the situation well.

You can carry a pistol in Massachusetts? I would have bet you couldn't even own one.

Whatever, :thumb: Well done and rep, bro

Jeff,

If I really felt it I would have but I knew I was at a advantage and he was not. I also thought to myself "Please dont come at me cause i will blow your head off"

I never felt out of control of the situation. I am so jacked up and my mind wont stop racing. I honestly am having a tough time figuring out all of it...basically its just a big blur.

I cant really express it much better. Scary night and worse off I did not get to shoot with my buddies and get hammered after..lol

I believe in CCW classes they usually teach you to shoot to kill if you are being attacked or your life may be in danger. If you shoot them and they live, you are in danger of being sued. Now I don't know if perhaps the family of the deceased could sue you, I don't think so but it probably might vary state by state.

It's a tough one though, I don't know for sure if I could actually take a life. If someone was coming at me with a gun or a knife and I knew for sure it was kill or be killed, instinct might take over at that point. Or, like you said, I might just put one in his stomach or knee. I don't know which would be worse, to have the blood on your hands of taking a life, or to have to deal with a lawsuit. I guess it depends on the situation and your conscience.

I have always wanted to shoot someone in the junk, maybe that's the ideal spot.

You're alright.

Assuming you are telling the truth (granted, hard to believe of a Bruins fan but bear with me), you asked him to stop essentially assaulting a woman. When he then attempted to assault you, you defended yourself. You didn't shoot him. You didn't escalate the situation - you said yourself he was drawing first - and you saved a woman from a situation which likely ranged somewhere between domestic abuse to potential murder.

We've had some arguments on SportsHoopla about gun control and whatnot. To be honest, I don't like it when people carry, for the most part. I feel most people simply don't need the firepower. But if you are going to carry, you need to be responsible about it, and from what you said it sounds like you were. As for you feeling torn up by what-ifs, good. I hope you continue to ask yourself those types of questions. Because the people who give a fuck about what happens when they pull the trigger are the ones I don't mind having guns. It's the morons who don't think about consequences and obligations that shouldn't be able to get a license.

And finally, here's one more what-if for you. What if you had just walked away and the guy killed her? How would you have felt then?

I do have a question though. What happened once the cops arrived? I assumed they asked you to lower your weapon and you complied and then they cuffed you and the other guy? I've always wondered how that goes down.

I don't think you did anything wrong. You have the permit to carry and once he pulled the knife you have to protect yourself. I am glad you didn't have to use it.

I wouldn't be trying to aim for anything except him. Whatever gets harm out of my way. If it costs him his life, that is on him. (figuratively speaking)

Excellent. Very nice work BF4. I believe you handled the situation perfectly. (Apparently so do the police. Otherwise you wouldn't have gotten your weapon back so quick)

I'm glad you didn't have to have the displeasure of having to take a life. That vision / feeling of pulling the trigger to do so never leaves the psyche.

Do you realize how many people have gun permits. You sound like people with permits are running around holding up stores and creating anarchy in the streets.

i said "everyone". not most, not some, EVERYONE. there are people with permits running around holding up stores and creating anarchy in the streets. its a small number, yes, but there are some people.

my stance on gun-control is no person should be able to control a room with a weapon. no automatics, no extremely long clips, no explosives. i'm not going to change my mind so arguing w/ me is pointless :)

I used to know a few assholes who seemed to only carry theirs in the hopes of inserting themselves into situations where they have a higher than normal chance of using them.

Jag offs like that are what give the honest a bad rap.

But I like to argue. If you want to control a room against someone with a gun, take up Krav Maga. You will never stop guns and crime from mixing no matter what bans you place on firearms.
