Update:

From a good friend who is a Policemen in that town.

This guy has been arrested 14 times for various crimes including assault and battery. He is divorced and his ex wife has a restraining order on him. He has been to jail 3 times already.

His current ex-GF took out a restraining order on him yesterday which triggered the entire event. They tested him for drugs and found traces of Meth in his system. I dont know if he was high or not when our encounter happened.

According to my good friend they are throwing the book at him and he is going to be looking at serious jail time. He said something along the lines of failing a drug test while under court order and breaking a court ordered restraining order.

This situation just sounds awful, all the way around. I can't say that I "know" that it's a tough situation for you, since I've never been through anything like that, but I can imagine it was incredibly difficult. I am glad to hear that cooler heads prevailed (even if they had to be cooled at gunpoint) and that ultimately things did not escalate beyond what they did.

And BF4L, good on you for getting involved and helping out a stranger when it was probably much easier to just look the other direction and walk away. Doing the right thing can be hard, but right is right. You are a true good samaritan, sir!

lol I am not all that great. I got very lucky. I am so glad that this putz did not push his luck. I am always prepared but I never thought about the aftermath if i was in a situation that caused me to take someones life.

I mean if someone broke into my home and was a threat to my wife and kids it is a no brainer and easy to choose but this was entirely different.

Honestly i think you would have had trouble sleeping if you would have read the news the next day and found that woman had been beaten or killed. You did the right thing.

I believe in CCW classes they usually teach you to shoot to kill if you are being attacked or your life may be in danger. If you shoot them and they live, you are in danger of being sued. Now I don't know if perhaps the family of the deceased could sue you, I don't think so but it probably might vary state by state.

It's a tough one though, I don't know for sure if I could actually take a life. If someone was coming at me with a gun or a knife and I knew for sure it was kill or be killed, instinct might take over at that point. Or, like you said, I might just put one in his stomach or knee. I don't know which would be worse, to have the blood on your hands of taking a life, or to have to deal with a lawsuit. I guess it depends on the situation and your conscience.

I have always wanted to shoot someone in the junk, maybe that's the ideal spot.

The family might try to sue you but the only one that could have disputed what you done would be the dead man. WHERE HE BELONGS - PROPS TO THE OP FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING
