With the loss of Stevie Johnson, I do expect Buffalo to force feed Sammy Watkins the ball. But even then, rookie receivers rarely put up big numbers.
If you look at rookie season stats of recent stud receivers:
- Josh Gordon: 50 recs, 805 yards, 5 TDs
- AJ Green: 65 recs, 1057 yards, 7 TDs
- Julio Jones: 54 recs, 959 yards, 8 TDs
- Dez Bryant: 45 recs, 561 yards, 6 TDs
I think that's roughly your ceiling for Watkins (if you look at rookie stat sheets on guys like Demaryius Thomas and Alshon Jeffery it's not so pretty). And that's assuming he lives up to the hype.
Gronk put up similar numbers in just 11 games played in 2011. A little less when he only played 7 games in 2010.
Personally I'd go with Gronk. And just make sure there's a respectable backup option available if he misses games.
Ok I admit this is a pretty dumb question too!!! But none the less I am pretty dense so just for the heck it is there anyone out there that would rather have Watkins and if so, why?
But, if you were drafting in a brand new keeper league that started today, who goes first? Gronk or Watkins?
There are a ton of good WRs and Watkins has not yet proven himself to be a difference maker. There is no doubt that Gronk has more value today in any format, so Foot would need extra assets to compensate. Like I said earlier, Watkins + a first rounder would be a good trade if he were rebuilding, but it also drastically hurts his chances to win today.
Trading a proven stud for an unproven rookie straight up is not a wise gamble. Many rookies bust.
Keeper league!
Who would you rather have on your team?
Gronk
or
Sammy Watkins
Gronk. Elite tight end production is much more difficult to find than elite WR production. Supply and demand
