I think what we really all learned here is that Bruins fans get a little "defensive" when this debate comes up. :-P

there's NO defenseman that can claim to be on Orr's level. and Detroit fans, please don't say Lidstrom. Him winning the Norris last year with a minus rating was pathetic. Also, the career leaders for pts per game are Gretz-1.921, Lemieux-1.883, Bossy-1.497, Orr-1.393. There's not another defenseman in the top 25. I could go on, but I don't feel I need to.

Relax, guy, you'll have to look long and hard for a Detroit fan dumb enough to say that Lidstrom was at Orr's level. And for every idiot homer that nuts, there's probably some knuckle dragger in Boston claiming that Lucic is better than Shanahan, and Savard was at Yzerman's level.

As far as that Norris last year, Nick was second in points behind Lubo and I don't think anyone's going to try and make the argument that Visnovsky is a better defensive player than Nick. Lidstrom lugged that cripple Rafalski up and down the ice like a sled dog and bailed out The Lost Boy Jonathan Ericsson every time he stepped on the ice. During all that he somehow had time to rip off 62 points. If you want to make a nice solid argument for Yandle, Lubo, Chara, Weber, or whoever deserving the Norris last year over Lidstrom that's fine. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions and very few awards are cut and dried. But anyone claiming that Norris win was a joke, a farce, or pathetic didn't watch the West last year, flat out.

Lidstrom must have shut down 50 2-on-1 breaks last year. I might have counted them all. It was pretty bad. :burt:

Nothing personal against Nick, but IMO, no one should win the Norris with a -2. Especially when they 2nd amongst defenseman in scoring. BTW, the shot at Nick in the original post was just a jab at you Deetroit fans here since it put him 1 behind Orr. :boink:

Meh...
Why not?
Norris is about points anyway... pretty sure we all know that.

Hell, negative or hovering around zero players get nominated for and win Selkes, why not Norris,'

Looks like someone missed the IMO part. If your the 2nd leading scoring D-man and STILL a minus for the year, again IMO, you didn't do much defending.

Personally I like the 5 Orrs vs. 5 Gretzkys vs. 5 Lemieuxs argument.

IMO, the 5 Orrs beat the 5 Lemieuxs (narrowly). Either of those teams wipes the floor with 5 Gretzkys.

Lemieux and Orr are the most talented players to play the game. Gretzky was a small (yeah it's a size thing) step behind.

Gretzky was miles ahead in terms of durability and had, without debate, the individual greatest career in the history of team sports.

Now....shana :ban: ?
I agree but, Gretzky did more to change the game than either of these guys. He is the reason there are so many teams in areas that shouldn't have teams and he made assists as important as goals. If you could only have one on your team Gretzky would be the one.

Sorry, but no. Orr could do it all. Gretz, not so much.

Sorry. Thought I was allowed a contrary opinion as well.
My mistake.

You are my friend. I just thought you missed where I was just giving my opinion. Everyone says Gretzky because of the scoring records, but IMO, Orr played in a tougher league. Like I said, IMO, if they were to play one on one with each having a goalie, Orr would win EVERY TIME.

A simple question.

Did you ever see Orr play?
I,ve seen both live, and was fortunate enough to view enough of their games
during their careers.
Orr revolutionized the d-man position and IMO no player I have seen him,has been a better all around talent.

It's just that a lot of people say Gretzky because he's not far removed from the game, and they never even saw Orr play.

If I,m picking between the 2 of them,it's Orr hands down.
