Looking to settle long standing arguement: Orr or Gretzky.

I'm taking Orr since he's the best two way player in sports, best skater in history, and had the premiere moment in sports history.

Obviously, there's not definitive answer, which is part of the fun of it, but I haven't really been able to find many expert takes on it. This is where I got most of my material:

Yeah seriously, you are asking for a ban for saying Mario is better than either.

(Gretzky, Howe, Orr, Mario in that order)

False choice.

Skinner > Gretzky & Orr

He's better looking, he's got way more potential, and have you heard that he's only 19?

Personally I like the 5 Orrs vs. 5 Gretzkys vs. 5 Lemieuxs argument.

IMO, the 5 Orrs beat the 5 Lemieuxs (narrowly). Either of those teams wipes the floor with 5 Gretzkys.

Lemieux and Orr are the most talented players to play the game. Gretzky was a small (yeah it's a size thing) step behind.

Gretzky was miles ahead in terms of durability and had, without debate, the individual greatest career in the history of team sports.

Now....shana :ban: ?

The way I look at it, and I'm sure I'll get backlash for this, but what made Orr special probably wouldn't translate to todays NHL. Gretzky's passing and knowing where the puck will be would still hold up in todays NHL. I go Gretzky.

I brought this up a bit in a thread earlier...but Mario scored 51 points in 16 games after recovering from Hodgkins and receiving chemo. My bias is certainly involved, but that's ridiculous.

Gretz has over 2000 more points than Orr yet still trails him in career +/-, lol. When he had over 200 pts in a season, he still couldn't beat Orr's +124. Orr NEVER had a minus season and unless he played less than 50 games, never had a rating below +54. Orr was +597 in 657 games for an average of +.908/game. Gretz was +518 in 1,487 games for an average of +.348. Lets put it this way, if Gretz and Orr were to play a game of one on one, with each having a goalie, Orr would win EVERY time, PERIOD!!! Gretz couldn't stop Orr, Orr would knock Gretz off the puck. Look, Gretzky was a great player, the greatest offensive player ever, but people debate whether Mario would have been greater if he had a relatively healthy career. there's NO defenseman that can claim to be on Orr's level. and Detroit fans, please don't say Lidstrom. Him winning the Norris last year with a minus rating was pathetic. Also, the career leaders for pts per game are Gretz-1.921, Lemieux-1.883, Bossy-1.497, Orr-1.393. There's not another defenseman in the top 25. I could go on, but I don't feel I need to.

You're saying Orr couldn't pass? Please say that's not what you meant. Orr could play in ANY era, including today. Gretz would get creamed in the old days. Gretzky played in a day of teams with watered down talent because of the WHA/expansion. Orr Played when there were only 6, then 12 teams. He won the Art Ross trophy, TWICE, lol. No defenseman ever has, or ever will, win the Ross again. FACT!!!!!
