Like I said 2 weeks ago, we are in a clown car going over a cliff. Several of us were told "not to panic" and Skinsdad said "we would get somebody good".

Sorry Skinsdad and other friends, I am not attacking you but you were wrong and I told you. Manusky will be a disaster and has done nothing of note in his career. This is his 4th time as a DC with his previous 3 times being a train wreck. Why in heaven's name did we hire him?

This should cost Gruden his job. This is his 3rd terrible DC choice and he is clearly NOT learning from his mistakes. Its troubling enough that our best candidates picked the Rams and Chargers ahead of us, but now we go dumpster diving and pick a proven loser.

Like I said several times, this whole process was a disaster and never had much structure to it at all. I am not sure where to place all of the blame BUT if it was Gruden's choice, then he should be shown the door next year if we don't make the playoffs. This is just unacceptable and I see little improvement over last years defense. Truth be told, I think improvement will be made due to the talent increase only.

Best guess...to once again prove @Shark a prophet, to wit: ......."and they said that we couldn't get worse than Barry!":D

Which I suppose leads to another interesting question....Does one Cousin equal three bad DC hires?:noidea::hope:

On a more serious note, my question to you is this: How much do you believe Gruden not wanting his possible replacement on staff played a role?

What role do you believe his having someone as competent defensively as he appears to be offensively also on staff which in effect would be another possible replacement for himself?

Manusky’s units have, on average, ranked 18th in total defense and 17th in points allowed. During his stint with the Colts, Manusky’s defenses struggled in all four seasons. Indianapolis never cracked the top 10 in total defense and only did so once in points allowed, finishing ninth in 2013. Manusky was fired after the 2015 season when the Colts ranked 26th in total defense and 25th in points allowed.

That is why the hire makes no sense. If I was worried about my job, I would hire the best person available just for the sack of job security purposes. Manusky was the 2nd to worst pick out of everyone we interviewed. The hire literally makes no sense. I don't care if he interviewed well, I don't care if the players like and I do not care if Gruden likes him. I would rather he interview poorly, the players don't care for him and Gruden have a business only relationship and he produce on the field than anything else. These buddy hires have to stop and it will ultimately cost Gruden his job.

I think that holds true Sty for the Barry hire, but I honestly think they and Jay made an effort this year. Guenther was Jay's #1. That became unavailable. They had interviews with Gus and had one lined up with Wade. Jay's contract status killed him this year. I read where they didn't like Pettine's interview. I think at the end of the day they just decided to go with Greg and hope he kills it, if not make another run at Guenther next year. I think as long as Jay's offense is top 5 he'll keep his job and I think he knows that.

It's on Scot to earn his paycheck now and get Greg some help over there.

I think anyone would common sense would want to keep their job. Are you implying that Gruden basically wants the entire organization to fail so he is sabotaging the team with an incompetent DC because he doesn't want to look over his shoulder?

No, 1 Cousins doesn't equal 3 bad DC. The bottom line is that we are as successful as he have been because of Cousins. IF we could replace him with a QB of equal or better value...lets do it! But once again, some of you don't understand that good QBs don't grow on trees. Why are we so anxious to get rid of the best player on our team.

I don't think anyone credible was going to take this job with Jay in year 4 of a 5 year contract with Dan Snyder as the owner.

If I'm Kirk why would I sign for 5 or 6 years if I don't know if Jay is going to be here or not. Kyle and McVay are gone. Those are 2 of the 3 people Kirk actually trust.

Dan and Scot are going to have to decide whether they want Jay here long term. Until then, this team is in a holding pattern and may not be that attractive to potential DC's and Kirk.
Bingo! This hire just set in motion things to come starting with Cousins signing elsewhere and Gruden out the door after next season. As I stated last week, if Manusky was hired it was a status quo hire and simply a place holder for things to come. If you are the Redskins FO, you have found yet another way to screw things up on a consistant basis.

First off, there has to be some rationale that leads others here to believe that Gruden didn't go after and get the guys that they deemed better than Manusky, so was just asking if that was possible in their way of thinking about it. Since this was mentioned in earlier threads there has to be an explanation even if it makes no sense...right?

Next, pretty touchy about Kirk I see, if you had bothered to understand what you had just read, you might have figured out that it was a compliment to Gruden's decision to go with Kirk vs. his thus far bad DC decisions. Having cleared that up, the rest of what you wrote has no place in this conversation, now does it?

Because if we sign Cousins to a long term deal, that officially takes us out of the hunt for the next Rogers/Wilson/Prescott/Insert more exciting Rookie QB Name here.

We can either settle for a pretty good QB who is in the mold of Alex Smith/Andy Dalton.... or keep chasing elite. You cant do both.

So then he is an upgrade, right?

You at least can't continue to throw expensive resources at chasing an elite qb and fix a stageringly poor defense.

Actually he might be, provided we dont roll into the season thinking we can improve on defense with the likes of Hood and RJF starting. And for the love of all that is wholesome and yummy... we need to ditch the bend but dont break concept as a basis of our defense. Because too many times it morphed into a bend over and take it defense.

Stymietee-

Maybe I have a case of the Sundays, but I am not following you.

I have not idea why he went after Manusky. I do not think its going to work at all. I believe we had better options out there. Much like in 2015, I have no idea why he went after Barry. I am begining to see a pattern with Gruden in that he makes terrible personnel decisions.

With respect to the Gruden decision of Cousins vs. the 3 bad DCs, I am not following you either.

Perhaps we should just kill the conversation as nether of us appear to be understanding each other...agree?

Good point Shark. A fear I do have is that we bring in 1 starting rookie and 3 above-average free agents and Manusky gets credit for turning it all around. Perhaps he will turn it around, but I just don't see it at this point. If history repeats itself, we are in for a below average defense.

Its still mind boggling that he hired him. He has failed everywhere he went.

well fellas i am not going to bash this hire . i will tell you why , i am not convinced manusky had all that great of talent to work with in the past . also , at this point i would take 17 or 18 as our defensive rating over the crap we have had for 3 years .

i dont give a damn what dream DC you can come up with that is available and wanted to be here our talent sucks dick , plain and simple

now i am not saying manusky is god's gift to the DC position , but this is what i look from him a , more aggressive approach , tighter coverage and improved tackling

if we can get that and be ranked in the middle of the pack , then we give ourselves a chance to make the playoffs

if he fails then we will be looking for another guy next year

considering the circumstances we got what we could get

as for all the CSI's going around i say this . we will sign most of our Fa's besides Djax ( who i think is la bound )

we should be in position to upgrade the defense but it will take time

yeah manusky appears to be a downer , hopefully it will work out

I hear you SKinsdad but you called out people for panicking and said we would get somebody "good". You were wrong on both accounts.

The problem is that Gruden is not a bad coach but he has made awful decisions at DC. SM handicapped him by neglecting the defense and not addressing glaring needs.

If we lose Kirk, we will take multiple steps back. He is the only reason we were decent this year. We had no running game and no defense. This season was all on Kirk and he did well. If our kicker could have hit a simple FG in London, we would have made the playoffs in spite of the opposition we faced.

Good QBs don't grow up on trees like most of you think.

It wasnt our Oline or receivers at all?
